Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 75-67 victory over Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
With the win, the Auggies move to 17-7 overall (13-6 MIAC) -- and 12-1 at Si Melby Hall -- while the Knights fall to 9-15 overall (7-12 MIAC). The Auggies have already locked up either the third or fourth spot in the MIAC playoffs which earns Augsburg the right to host a quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Si Melby Hall. Saturday's results will determine who the Auggies will host. The win also marks the 200th victory of head Coach
Aaron Griess' career -- he posted a 71-61 record as Head Coach at Chaminade University and is currently 129-103 as coach of the Auggies.
Seidlitz finished the night 11-of-16 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, while adding four rebounds and three assists, playing the entire 40 minutes of action.
Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) also played all 40 minutes and led Augsburg on the boards, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds and adding eight points and a blocked shot.
Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was
Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS),
Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) and
Ryan Gilmer (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS). Hines finished with 12 points and a game-high eight assists, while Veach and Gilmer finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Carleton finished with four players in double figures, led by Taylor Hanson, who posted a 20-point, six-rebound effort.
The Knights shot the lights out in the first half, connecting on 73.9 percent (17-of-23) of their shots. Augsburg shot 50.0 (13-of-26) from the field, including 5-of-7 from three point range in the frame, but trailed 41-35 at the intermission.
The tides changed in the second half with Augsburg starting the frame on a 17-2 run. The Augsburg defense also turned up the pressure and held Carleton to just 23.1 percent (6-of-26) shooting in the half. Augsburg was able to extend its lead to as many as 13 points in the half and put an exclamation point on the win with a Seidliz dunk at the 4:51 mark that had fans on their feet. The Knights cut the lead to six with under two minute to play but Augsburg was able to convert on 4-of-4 in the final minute to seal the 75-67 win for the Auggies.
For the game, the Auggies finished 56.0 percent (28-of-50) from the field, while the Knights connected on 46.9 percent (23-of-49) of their shots. Augsburg grabbed a narrow 28-27 advantage on the boards and was able to hit 8-of-14 from 3-point range, while Carleton only connected on 4-of-13.
Augsburg plays its final MIAC regular season contest on Saturday (2/22) when the Auggies travel to Winona, Minn. for a men's and women's doubleheader. Women's action is scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m. when the men will begin at 3 p.m.
