Augsburg tops Concordia-Moorhead 79-69

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) led the Augsburg College men's basketball team with 23 points in an important 79-69 victory over Concordia College-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall. With the win, the Auggies move into third place in the MIAC standings at 13-6 overall (9-5 MIAC), while the Cobbers fall to 10-10 overall (6-9 MIAC).

Kornbaum finished 10-of-14 from the floor, marking his tenth 20-plus scoring effort of the season. Kornbaum added a game-high seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot to his stat line. Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich.) and Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) finished with 16 points apiece and Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) added 10 points for the Auggies.

Concordia was led by Brett Bergeson, who came off the bench to score a game-high 26 points, including connecting on 6-of-13 from beyond the arc.

Augsburg started the game on a 17-2 run and never relinquished the lead. The Auggies connected on 7-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half and led by as many as 23 in the frame before taking a 44-26 lead into the locker room at the break.

Concordia fought its way back into the game, cutting the Auggie lead to single digits with just under 9:30 to play. Augsburg used a key 7-0 run over a two-and-a-half minute stretch to push the lead back to a 14 point advantage with 2:39 remaining in the action. The Auggies were able to make enough free throws down the stretch to seal the 79-69 victory.

For the game, the Auggies finished 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the field, while the Cobbers connected on 45.2 percent (28-of-62) of their shots. Augsburg claimed a 34-30 advantage on the boards and despite committing an identitical 11 turnovers, the Auggies were able to outscore Concordia 20-8 in points off turnovers. The Auggies posted a 36-22 advantage in points in the paint and were able to convert on 17-of-26 from the free throw line, while the Cobbers only were able to hit on 4-of-8.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (2/5) at 7:30 p.m., when the Auggies travel to Collegeville, Minn. to take on Saint John's University in another important conference contest.
