BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College women's basketball team finished with four players in double figures as the Auggies posted an important 64-56 win over the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall. With the win, Augsburg moves to 9-10 overall (6-10 MIAC), while the Blazers fall to 10-9 overall (7-9 MIAC) as both teams remain in the hunt for one of the three remaining playoff spots.
Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) led all players with 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range, while tying a season-best with nine rebounds.
Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) led all players on the boards, pulling down 11 rebounds while adding seven points and three steals.
St. Benedict was paced by Tish Alexander, who scored 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, while adding three rebounds and three steals.
Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies was,
Jessica Lillquist (SO, Sebeka, Minn./Sebeka HS), who posted 13 points, while adding five rebounds and a pair of assists for the Auggies.
Destiny Scott (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field and
Jenna Orth (SO, Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) scored 10 points and added five rebounds with a game-high four assists.
The first half was a tightly contested affair that featured five tied scores and two lead changes with neither team able to extend their lead to double digits. Augsburg's Tichy was able to connect on a free throw and a 3-pointer in the final 1:06 to give the Auggies a 30-26 lead at the intermission.
The second half feaured four more tied scores and two lead changes as both teams battled in an evenly matched contest. In the end, Augsburg was able to convert on 9-of-13 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to close out the important 64-56 MIAC victory.
For the game, Augsburg shot a 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the field -- including connecting on 7-of-15 from beyond the arc, while the Blazers hit 32.8 percent (19-of-58) of their shots. Augsburg claimed a commanding 44-34 advantage on the boards.
Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Saturday (2/8) at 1 p.m., when the Auggies travel across town to take on Macalester College in a women's and men's doubleheader.
