Oles pull away for win over Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS -- Despite having three players score in double figures, the Augsburg College men's basketball team dropped a 79-60 decision to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader St. Olaf College on Wednesday evening at the Skoglund Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game was a close one in the first half, with neither team leading by more than eight points. St. Olaf lef 34-27 at halftime.
• Augsburg used a 17-9 run over the first 6:43 of the second half to take its last lead of the game, 44-43 with 13:17 left. St. Olaf took the lead back and the Auggies cut the advantage to four points, 59-55 with 7:57 remaining. But the Oles outscored the Auggies 20-5 down the stretch to claim the victory.
• Both teams had strong shooting nights, with St. Olaf hitting 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the field, including a 56.5-percent (13-of-23) performance in the second half. Augsburg shot 46.8 percent (22-of-47) from the field in the game.
• St. Olaf connected on 20-of-28 from the free-throw line, while Augsburg went 12-of-15.
• St. Olaf took advantage of 12 Augsburg turnovers, scoring 13 points off Auggie miscues. St. Olaf also outrebounded Augsburg by a 31-26 margin. The Oles converted 11 offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points in the game.
• Brandon Little (JR, Broomfield, Colo.) led the Auggies in scoring, matching his season-high with 12 points. Parker Hines (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) scored 11 points and had two assists, and Collin Olmscheid (FY, Buffalo, Minn.) scored 10 points -- his eighth double-digit scoring effort of the season.
• Harry Sonie (FY, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) led the Auggies with five rebounds and three assists in 14 minutes played off the bench

FOR THE FOES
• St. Olaf, ranked No. 21 in the latest D3hoops.com Division III national poll, was led by Ben Figini, who scored 21 points. Justin Pahl scored 14 points (11-of-13 from the free-throw line), while adding three assists and three steals.
• Sterling Nielsen scored 11 points with five rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Sam Daly had 10 points and five rebounds.

• Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (1/17) at 3 p.m., hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Si Melby Hall.
