Turnovers cost Auggies in loss to Oles

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jenna Orth (JR, Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) led Augsburg College with nine points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals, but her Auggie women's basketball team dropped a 58-48 decision to visiting St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team led by more than six points in a close first half. St. Olaf led 27-23 at halftime, and an 11-5 run gave the Oles a 48-38 lead with 5:47 left to play. St. Olaf led by as many as 11 points down the stretch.
• The teams combined for 44 turnovers -- St. Olaf with 23 and Augsburg with 21 -- with the Oles scoring 23 points-off-turnovers and the Auggies scoring 15 points off the Ole miscues.
• Second-half shooting also proved to be a key in the game. Augsburg shot just 22.2 percent (8-of-36) from the field in the second half, while St. Olaf hit 45.0 percent (9-of-20). In the game, the Auggies hit on just 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the field, while the Oles hit 39.6 percent (19-of-48) from the field. St. Olaf connected on 15-of-20 (75.0 percent) from the free-throw line in the game, while Augsburg hit just 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from the charity stripe.

• Destiny Scott (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) and Laykn Bauer (SO, Eau Claire, Wis./North HS) scored eight points apiece for the Auggies, with Ashley Anfinson (JR, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) scoring six points.
• Jessica Lillquist (JR, Sebeka, Minn./Sebeka HS) poulled down nine rebounds, while Bridget Bednar (FY, Pierz, Minn./Pierz HS) had five rebounds and scored five points.
• Orth claimed a career-high 11 rebounds in the contest, her third double-digit rebound game of her career and a season-high rebound total for an Auggie in 2014-15.


FOR THE FOES
• Betsey Daly led the Oles with a double-double, scoring 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field with 10 rebounds. She also had three steals, two assists and a blocked shot.
• Three Oles scored eight points apiece -- Nikki Frogner, Zoe Hanson and Lauren Gutierrez. Frogner added six rebounds.
• Kari Keogh scored six points, and Woo Bandel had six steals and five assists for the Oles.


UP NEXT
• Both teams return to action on Saturday (1/17). Augsburg hosts Concordia-Moorhead at 1 p.m. at Si Melby Hall, while St. Olaf plays at St. Catherine.
