Auggies return to MIAC play with win over Gusties

MINNEAPOLIS -- Mack Ohnsted (JR, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) scored two goals and added an assist for a three-point night, lifting Augsburg College to a 5-3 win over Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Ohnsted gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead with a goal at the 19:44 mark of the first period, assisted by Eli May (FY, Eagan, Minn.) and Ben McClellan (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), then gave the Auggies a 3-1 lead with a goal 1:21 into the third period, assisted by May.
• McClellan scored an empty-net goal at the 19:56 mark of the third period to give him a two-point night. His empty-net goal was assisted by Ohnsted and Rory Vesel (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS).
• Drew Allen (JR, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies with a goal from Dylan Meier (SO, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) and Drew Anderson (FY, Rochester, Minn./Century HS), followed 2:19 later by Ohnsted's first goal of the game.
• Lucas Hendrickson (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) gave Augsburg a 4-2 advantage with an unassisted goal at the 6:56 mark of the third period, part of a five-goal, back-and-forth third period for the two MIAC rivals.
• Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 33-31 margin. Augsburg goalie Fredrik Melander (SO, Uppsala, Sweden/Trinity-Pawling Prep (N.Y.) HS) had 30 saves in improving to 5-4-0 on the season.
• Evan Hesse (FY, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) had five shots on-goal for Augsburg, while Anderson, Ohnsted and Nate Flynn (FY, Hastings, Minn.) had three shots each.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Ohnsted eclipsed the 50-point plateau for career scoring with his three-point night. In 64 career games, Ohnsted now has 18 goals and 34 assists for 52 points.
• Ohnsted, who leads the Auggies with 10 goals and 17 assists, stands in a tie for second among MIAC players in overall statistics in goals, while he is tied for fourth in total points.
• McClellan's 11 assists are tied for second-most among MIAC players in overall statistics, while his 15 points are tied for seventh-most. McClellan now has 73 points (37 goals, 36 assists) in 87 career games.
• Hendrickson now has four goals on the season, tied for second-most goals by a defender in the MIAC's overall statistics. His 10 points (four goals, six assists) are tied for third-most among MIAC defenders.
• With the victory, Augsburg snapped a 13-game (0-12-1) winless streak to Gustavus. Augsburg's last win over the Gusties was a 5-3 win in the MIAC Showcase on Nov. 1, 2009 in Bloomington, Minn.


FOR THE FOES
• Connor Deal figured in each of Gustavus' goals, with a goal and two assists. He gave the Gusties their first goal with an even-strength marker at the 16:47 mark of the second period, assisted by Jake Bushey and Blake Schammel.
• The Gusties' final two goals came in the third period on the power play, with Bushey scoring from Deal at the 4:03 mark, and Schammel scoring from Deal and Bushey at the 9:59 mark.
• John McLean had 26 saves in goal for Gustavus.
