Auggies fall at Concordia in offensive shootout

MOORHEAD -- Joey Sonnenfeld (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) caught seven passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 56-24 decision to host Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Despite outgaining Concordia by a 484-481 margin in the game, the Auggies were unable to overcome a 14-0 first-quarter deficit. The Auggies cut the lead to 21-17 early in the third quarter, but the Cobbers outscored the Auggies 35-7 the rest of the way to pick up the win.
• Sonnenfeld caught seven passes for 144 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter and a career-long 84-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. It was his fifth straight 100-plus-yard receiving game.
• Quarterback Ayrton Scott (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) completed 18-of-32 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns against one interception. His other touchdown pass was a 30-yarder to Scott Bossard (SR, North Branch, Minn.) early in the third quarter. Scott also rushed 16 times for 76 yards.
• Tyrell Martin (SR, West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) rushed 20 times for 101 yards, his third 100-yard-plus rushing game of the season.
• Bossard caught four passes for 60 yards in the game.
• Tyler Hanson (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) connected on his first collegiate field goal, a 34-yarder late in the second quarter.

• Defensively, Matt Shively (JR, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had eight tackles (four solo), including a tackle for-loss. Mykar Groves (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn./Simley HS) had seven tackles (three solo) and a quarterback sack, and Raymond Carter (SO, Jordan, Minn.) also had seven tackles (two solo) and a quarterback hurry.
• Alan Medina-Gonzalez (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) had six tackles (three solo), including a tackle for-loss and a forced fumble, and Tyler Sis (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) had a fumble recovery.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Scott now has 12,872 career yards of total offense, moving into sixth place in the category in NCAA Division III history. The Division III record is 14,568 yards, set by Kevin Burke of Mount Union (Ohio) from 2011-14. Scot's 357.6 total offense yards per-game average is second in Division III history, behind the 364.6 yards per-game average set by Brett Elliott of Linfield (Ore.) from 2004-05.
• Scott holds school career records for passing yardage (9,263) and rushing yardage (3,609), along with rushing attempts (625), rushing touchdowns (33) and passing touchdowns (89). He stands second in pass completions (665) and third in pass attempts (1,124).
• Sonnenfeld became the fourth receiver in Augsburg history to eclipse the 3,000-yard barrier in receiving yardage. In three seasons at Augsburg, he now has 177 catches for 3,076 yards. His 33 receiving touchdowns as an Auggie are third-best in school history.


FOR THE FOES
• Chad Johnson rushed 17 times for 133 yards and three touchdowns for Concordia, an 18-yarder in the first quarter, a two-yarder in the third quarter and an 18-yarder in the fourth quarter. Jason Montonye rushed four times for 81 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
• Quarterback Michael Herzog completed 7-of-14 passes for 134 yards and three toucheowns, while also rushing for a one-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. 
• Adam Essler's two catches in the game were both touchdowns, a 71-yarder late in the first quarter and a 16-yarder in the second quarter. Jon Baune also caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Herzog in the third quarter.
• Erik Bye had 11 tackles (four solo), including a sack and 1.5 tackles for-loss, while Derek Rachel had 10 tackles (three solo). Hank Van Liew had an interception for the Cobbers.
