Auggies lose heartbreaker in five

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College volleyball team fell to 19-8 overall (5-5 MIAC) with a heartbreaking five-set loss to visiting Saint Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Wednesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg honored its two senior vollebyall players, Jessica Lillquist (SR, Sebeka, Minn.) and Ashley Peper (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), who played their last regular-season match at Si Melby Hall together.
• The Auggies and Blazers put on a show for the home crowd on senior night, as the score was tied 16 times and the lead changed eight times. Saint Benedict attacked at a slightly higher clip than the Auggies -- .218 to .159 -- and recorded nine more digs than the home team with 115. Both teams finished with seven total team blocks and six service aces in a very even match. 
• Peper saved her best performance of the year for senior night, as she finished with a season-high 28 kills and chipped in 18 digs, six assists, two blocks and a service ace. Lillquist recorded four kills, two digs and a block. 
• Jaelyn Arndt (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) recorded 14 kills and two blocks for the Auggies, while Taylor Linn (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) finished with eight kills and five blocks.
• Setter Courtney Lemke (JR, Brownton, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) finished with 48 assists, 17 digs and two kills, while Morgan Malley (FY, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) tallied five assists, 16 digs, and four aces. 
• Macey Terhell (FY, Osceola, Wis.) recorded a team-high 32 digs, while DeeDee Maier (JR, Middleton, Wis.) finished with 12 digs and two kills. 


FOR THE FOES
• Megan Pekarek led the Blazers to victory with her third straight triple-double with 50 assists, 13 kills, and 13 digs. 
• Laura Schmitt recorded 20 kills, 23 digs, six assists and two blocks in the match, while Briana Schmiesing finished with 21 kills to lead Saint Benedict. 


UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to Bethel for a crucial match with playoff implications on Saturday (10/31) at 6 p.m. If the Auggies win, they guarantee themselves a spot in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs. Prior to Saturday, Carleton has a match against St. Olaf on Friday (10/30). If the Knights were to lose, the Auggies will clinch a playoff spot regardless of Saturday's outcome.
• Saint Benedict hosts Concordia on Saturday (10/31) at 3 p.m. The two teams are currently tied for fourth place with 7-3 records in conference play.
