Auggie women's hockey tops Blugolds in OT

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- Valerie Whichello (FY, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) made her first collegiate goal a meaningful one, as she scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Augsburg College women's hockey team a 2-1 win over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in nonconference action on Saturday night.

RECORDS: Augsburg 1-1-0 overall, UW-Eau Claire 1-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Whichello scored the game-winning goal at the 1:33 mark of overtime on an assist from Brenna Nakonechny (SR, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS).
• Danielle Heitkamp (JR, Bismarck, N.D./Grand Rapids (Minn.) HS) put the Auggies on the scoreboard with a power-play goal at the 12:26 mark of the first period, assisted by Sarah Buckner (SR, Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Claire Cripps (SR, Hutchinson, Minn.). 
• Cripps had five shots on-goal in the game to lead the Auggies. UW-Eau Claire outshot Augsburg by a 26-21 margin in the game.
• Rebecca Sonnek (SO, Edina, Minn.) picked up the victory for the Auggies in goal, making 25 saves.

FOR THE FOES
• Jaedyn Walz scored the lone goal of the game for UW-Eau Claire, a marker at the 9:35 mark of the second period assisted by Paige Dale and Lauren Norgren.
• Paige Turner had 19 saves in goal for the Blugolds.

• Augsburg opens MIAC play with a series against St. Catherine on Nov. 13-14.
