Auggies finish sweep with 4-2 win over Wildcats

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring twice in a 1:49 span in the third period, the Augsburg College women's hockey team completed a series sweep of St. Catherine University with a 4-2 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a scoreless first period, Augsburg scored twice in the final 6:32 of the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Megan Johnson (FY, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by Kayla Fuechtmann (SR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS), at the 13:28 mark, and Sarah Buckner (SR, Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored a power-play goal from Ashley Kloncz (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) at the 19:18 mark.
• St. Catherine tied the game at the 3:45 mark of the third period, but Johnson gave the Auggies the lead back just 2:03 later, scoring her second goal of the game from Fuechtmann and Buckner at the 5:48 mark.
• Fuechtmann capped the scoring for the Auggies with a shorthanded goal at the 7:37 mark of the third period.
• Augsburg claimed a 24-23 shots-on-goal advantage over St. Catherine, including a 10-2 margin in the first period.
• Danielle Heitkamp (JR, Bismarck, N.D./Grand Rapids (Minn.) HS) had five shots on-goal for Augsburg, while Claire Cripps (SR, Hutchinson, Minn.) and Darby Lindgren (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) had three shots each.
• Erika Allen (SR, Roseville, Minn.) picked up the victory for the Auggies in goal, making 21 saves.


FOR THE FOES
• Annie Buttermore opened the scoring for St. Catherine with a goal at the 8:09 mark of the second period, assisted by Allie Guzy and Alex Pederson.
• Mallory Ryan scored for the Wildcats at the 3:45 mark of the third period, assisted by Laken Muller.
• Abbi White had 20 saves in goal for the Wildcats.


UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to action with a MIAC series next weekend against Gustavus. The Auggies host the Gusties on Friday (11/20) at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, then play at Gustavus next Saturday (11/21) at 2 p.m.
• St. Catherine has a MIAC series next Friday and Saturday at Concordia-Moorhead.
