Auggie comeback falls short in overtime

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College rallied from a 3-0 deficit with three goals in the final 5:39 of regulation time, but Gustavus Adolphus College spoiled the Auggie comeback with a goal 1:57 into overtime, as the Gusties claimed a 4-3 win over the Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Augsburg comeback started at the 14:21 mark of the third period, Eli May (SO, Eagan, Minn.) scored a shorthanded goal, assisted by Mack Ohnsted (SR, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) and Nate Flynn (SO, Hastings, Minn.).
• Brady Bender (FY, Steamboat Springs, Colo.) scored his first collegiate goal at the 17:52 mark, assisted by Will Peterson (SO, Eagan, Minn.) and Luke Dietsch (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS).
• The Auggies tied the game with nine seconds left in regulation time, as Flynn scored an extra-attacker, power-play goal from Corbin Chapman (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) and Rory Vesel (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS).
• The Auggies had a penalty shot opportunity early in the third period, but could not convert the shot.
• Augsburg outshot Gustavus by a 41-21 margin, including a 19-6 advantage in the third period. The Auggies also had a 38-23 advantage in faceoff wins.
• Flynn and Bender had five shots on-goal each, while Peterson, Chapman and Drew Allen (SR, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) had four shots each.
• Jordyn Kaufer (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) had 17 saves in goal for the Auggies. 


FOR THE FOES
• Jared Docken scored the game-winning goal for Gustavus at the 1:57 mark of overtime, assisted by Cam Jackson and Tim Donohue.
• Colin Hernon scored the first two goals of the game for the Gusties, a goal from Van Sullivan and Edvin Johansson 5:57 into the game, and the second from Sullivan at the 9:37 mark of the period.
• Donohue gave the Gusties a 3-0 lead with an unassisted, shorthanded goal at the 8:34 mark of the third period.
• Chris Amsden had 38 saves in goal for Gustavus.

• Augsburg returns to action the weekend of Dec. 4-5 with a series against St. Olaf. The opener is on Dec. 4 at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and the finale is on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Olaf.
