Augsburg comes up just short in loss to Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team had a good look at a three-pointer with just one second remaning in the game, but wasn't able to convert as the Auggies fell 73-70 to Concordia College-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Auditorium.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Concordia-Moorhead 73, Augsburg 70
LOCATION: Memorial Auditorium, Moorhead, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 4-3 overall (1-3 MIAC), Concordia 4-5 overall (1-3 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In a game that featured five tied scores, five lead changes and neither team leading by more than 10 points, it was no surprise that the contest went down to the buzzer. Trailing 73-70, the Auggies fouled Concordia with nine seconds remaning. The Cobbers missed the free-throw attempt and Harry Sonie (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) grabbed the rebound and dribbled the length of the floor, kicking it out to Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) who had a good look at a three-pointer on the baseline with one second to play. But the shot didn't fall as Augsburg fell to the Cobbers 73-70.
• The Auggies were led offensively by Sonie, who posted a career-high 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line, while adding five rebounds and three assists.
• Augsburg's Olmscheid,
Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), Nick Varner (SO,  Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) and Ryan Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) finished with 10 points apiece for the Auggies.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the floor -- the Auggies second-best shooting performance of the season, while Cobbers connected on 54.9 percent (28-of-51) of their field-goal attempts.
• Augsburg and Concordia finished deadlocked at 25 rebounds apiece, while Augsburg claimed a 44-36 advantage in points in the paint.
 • The Auggies were only able to connect on 5-of-16 from three-point range, while Concordia converted on 10-of-21 of its three-point attempts.

FOR THE FOES
• Concordia finished with three players in double figures, led by Jordan Bloger, who finished with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor.
• Brady Syverson led the Cobbers on the boards, pulling down nine rebounds, while adding four points.

• Concordia will be off until Saturday (1/2) when the Cobbers travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College.
