Augsburg posts 2-0 record at Puerto Rico Classic

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team posted a 56-51 victory over York College (N.Y.) in the Puerto Rico Classic on Monday afternoon. With the victory, the Auggies complete a perfect 5-0 nonconference record this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• York jumped out to an early 9-0 lead but the Auggies countered with a 14-0 run of their own. The teams were evenly matched for the remainder of the frame, with Augsburg taking a 24-19 lead into the locker room at the intermission. 
• Augsburg was able to extend its lead to as many as 10 in the second half, but the York defense forced some Auggie turnovers and was able to take a 34-33 lead with 10 minutes to play. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half until Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) connected on a pair of three-pointers and Ryan Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added another, giving Augsburg a 51-44 advantage. York was able to cut the lead to one possession, but Augsburg hit its free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
 • Augsburg was led offensively by Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.), who posted 17 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals. 
• Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies was Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS). Rasmussen scored 13 points while adding five rebounds and a steal.
• Richie Perea (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) led the Auggies on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds while adding five points.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 39.5 percent (17-of-43) from the floor, while York was held to 36.2 percent (17-of-47) of their field-goal attempts.

• Augsburg claimed a 33-31 advantage on the boards and claimed a 19-13 advantage in the turnover battle.

FOR THE FOES
• York was led offensively by Ryan Smart, who claimed a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds.

• Augsburg will return to action on Wednesday (1/6) when the Auggies host Hamline University in MIAC action at 7 p.m.
• York will return to action on Tuesday (1/5) when they travel to Jamaica, N.Y. to take on Brooklyn College.
