Auggies win back-and-forth affair over Pipers

MINNEAPOLIS -- Behind a career-high 29 points from Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) and a double-double by Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), the Augsburg College men's basketball team scored an 80-77 win over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg led by as many as 12 points midway through the second half, before Hamline rallied to take a 76-74 lead with 1:12 left to play. But Augsburg outscored Hamline by a 6-1 margin down the stretch to claim the win. Olmscheid scored back-to-back baskets to give the Auggies a 78-76 lead with 28 seconds left, and after Hamline hit 2-of-4 free throws on two possessions, Ryan Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) hit 1-of-2 free throws with three seconds remaining to give the Auggies the final margin of victory. 
• Olmscheid's 29 points, on 11-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range, marked a career-high in scoring. He also added seven rebounds, and assist and a steal, playing 39 minutes.
• Rasmussen claimed his first point-rebound double-double of the season, and fifth of his career, with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He connected on 7-of-9 from the field in the contest.
• Joe Zangel (Sr, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored 14 points with eight rebounds and two assists.
• Kevin McKiernan (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) scored eight points with two assists and two steals, while Gilmer and Richie Perea (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) had three points and five assists each.
• For the game, Augsburg shot a season-best 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the field, while Hamline shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field. Augsburg outrebounded Hamline by a 37-26 margin, including 14 offensive rebounds, which the Auggies converted into 16 second-chance points.


FOR THE FOES
• Hamline was paced by Zach Smith, who scored 21 points with three assists, three rebounds and a steal. Herbert Tarpeh scored nine points with a team-high seven rebounds and a blocked shot.
• Connor Knutson scored 14 points and had four rebounds, while Brian Hartman had 13 points and four steals.
