Augsburg rally falls short at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College women's hockey team nearly rallied from a 4-0, first-period deficit, but fell just short in a 5-4 loss to host Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Saturday evening at Oscar Johnson Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Rachel Hennessy (SR, Williston, N.D.) scored two goals as part of Augsburg's rally, while Claire Cripps (JR, Hutchinson, Minn.) had a goal and an assist. Brenna Nakonechny (JR, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) scored the other Auggie goal in the game.
• Hennessy scored her first goal of the game at the 3:52 mark of the second period, assisted by Darby Lindgren (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS). Her second goal, at the 16:24 mark of the third period, was scored on an assist by Cripps.
• Nakonechny scored her second goal of the weekend at the 11:31 mark of the second period, a power-play goal assisted by Danielle Heitkamp (SO, Bismarck, N.D./Grand Rapids (Minn.) HS).
• After Hamline scored an empty-net goal with 18 seconds left to play, Cripps scored an unassisted goal for the Auggies with six seconds remaining in the game.
• Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 42-20 margin in the game, including a 34-12 margin over the final two periods. All three Auggie goalies played in the game, with Brianna Schulz (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) recording 12 saves in 46 minutes of relief.
• Kayla Fuechtmann (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had eight shots on-goal in the game, while Hennessy had seven shots and Nakonechny had five.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Going into the final weekend of the regular season, Augsburg is tied in sixth place with St. Catherine, with both teams having 14 league points, three points behind fifth-place Bethel's 17 points. The top five teams in the MIAC standings qualify for the conference's postseason playoffs.
• Cripps' 10 assists this season put her in a tie for ninth place in the category among MIAC players in overall statistics. 
• In 98 career games, Hennessy now has 47 goals and 21 assists for 68 career points. Her 68 points are seventh-most in Augsburg women's hockey history, while her 47 goals are fourth-most.


FOR THE FOES
• Kelsey Rafferty had a three-goal hat trick for the Pipers, including an empty-net goal with 18 seconds remaining.
• Sam Berger and Jaci Reinke scored the other Piper goals, with Jordan Verleye and Chelsea Koehn recording two assists each.
• Katie Beckman claimed 38
 saves in goal for Hamline.

• Augsburg closes the regular season with a series against St. Olaf. Next Friday's (2/20) game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, while next Saturday's (2/21) game is at 2 p.m. at the Northfield (Minn.) Ice Arena.
