Lacrosse season opens with loss to Augustana

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lexi Halvorson (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored two goals to lead the Augsburg College women's lacrosse team in its opening game of the 2015 season, a 21-5 loss to Augustana College (Ill.) on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Halvorson scored two goals on sprints off of successful draw controls for the Auggies.
• Shelby Brion (SO, Clearwater, Minn./Monticello HS), Ashley Pettipiece (FY, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) and Natalie Shaw (SO, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) also scored goals for the Auggies in the contest.
• Augustana outshot Augsburg by a 48-11 margin in the contest, while also holding a 22-6 advantage in draw controls.
• Making her collegiate debut in goal, Marissa Guillou (SO, Clearwater, Minn./Monticello HS) had 21 saves in goal for the Auggies.
• Augustana converted 20-of-22 clearing attempts, while Augsburg was limited to 12-of-23. Augustana also scored on four of its eight free-position shots, compared to 1-of-2 for Augsburg.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The game marked the beginning of the second season of Augsburg's women's lacrosse program -- the first collegiate varsity women's lacrosse program in Minnesota.

• Also on Saturday, Carthage (Wis.) topped Loras (Iowa) 21-3 at Edor Nelson Field (click here for boxscore).

FOR THE FOES
• Hilary Kargl and Anne Hopkins scored four goals each for Augustana, while Kelly Stelzer scored three goals.  Kargl also had three assists for the Vikings.
• Jenna Hofmann had two saves in 52 minutes of play for the Vikings, with Analia Fowler recording a save in relief.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will have two games on Sunday (2/22) at Edor Nelson Field, hosting Loras (Iowa) at 12 p.m. and Carthage (Wis.) at 3 p.m.
