Auggies clinch playoff berth with 4-1 victory over St. Olaf

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ben McClellan (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had a two-goal night for Augsburg College in a 4-1 victory over St. Olaf College at Ed Saugestad Rink on Saturday. With the win, the Auggies clinched the fourth seed in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey postseason playoffs and will host No. 5 seed Hamline University on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Evan Hesse (FY, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) opened the scoring for the evening with a tally at the 3:13 mark of the first period on assists by Brett Bukowski (FY, Superior, Wis./Superior HS (Coulee Region Chill-NAHL) and Drew Anderson (FY, Rochester, Minn./Century HS (Austin Bruins-NAHL).
• McClellan scored the Auggies' second and third goals of the evening -- an even strength goal at the 17:39 mark of the second period on assists by Corbin Chapman (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) and Zach Dick (SR, Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS (Grand Rapids HS) and another even strength goal at the 14:39 mark of the third period on assists by Will Peterson (FY, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS (Minnesota Wilderness-NAHL)) and Hesse.
• Chris Nuth (SO, Trabuco Canyon, Calif./Mission Viejo HS) closed the scoring for the Auggies with an empty net goal at the 19:06 mark of the third period.
• Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 38-23 margin in the game, with John Bretzman (SR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) collecting 22 saves in goal for the win for the Auggies.
Drew Allen (JR, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) had six shots on-goal to lead the Auggies, while McClellan had five shots.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg clinched the fourth seed in the MIAC playoffs, marking the first return to the MIAC postseason for the Auggies since the 2010-11 season.

• McClellan now has 77 points (40 goals, 37 assists) in 95 career games.
• Chapman's team-best 15 assists put him tied for fourth among MIAC players in overall assists. He is in ninth place among all MIAC players with 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists).

FOR THE FOES
• Matt Geurts scored his sixth goal of the season on an unassisted tally at the 8:00 mark of the second period.
• Steve Papciak had 34 saves in goal for St. Olaf.
