Auggies travel to Georgia for season-opening series

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) hit .462 (6-for-13) in the opening series of the season for the Augsburg College baseball team, as the Auggies went 1-3 in four games against Franklin College (Ind.) on Friday and Saturday at the Perfect Game Park South complex.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
• Kappers hit .462 on the weekend, going 6-for-13 at the plate, with two doubles, three RBI and two stolen bases, while also reaching base on three walks for a .529 on-base percentage.
• Jack Duffy (SO, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) hit .400 (4-for-10) with five RBI and a double on the weekend.
• Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) had five hits on the weekend, including a home run, with two runs scored and two RBI.
• Brandon Schmahl (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) made his Augsburg debut with a 4-hit weekend with a triple, driving in two runs and scoring three.
• Nine Auggie pitchers saw action in the weekend series, with Chris Bambenek (SR, St. Charles, Minn.) recording seven strikeouts. Tanner Oakes (SR, Jordan, Minn.) and Jordan Brandt (SO, Eagan, Minn.) had five strikeouts each.

FRIDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS
• In the first game, Augsburg spread out the hitting, with six batters getting at least one hit, including two-hit efforts from Kappers, Pruszinske, Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.) and Scott Livermore (JR, Stillwater, Minn.). 
• Brookshaw and Steven Piette (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had run-scoring doubles in the first inning for the Auggies, with Kappers driving in a run on a single.
• Tyler Ellefson (JR, Hutchinson, Minn.) and Kappers singled in runs in the sixth inning. Livermore drove in a run on an error in the seventh inning, and Pruszinske plated the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning.
• In the second game, Duffy went 2-for-4 with four RBI, bringing in a run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning, driving in two runs on a single in the fourth inning and doubling home a run in the sixth.
• Pruszinske hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning for the Auggies.
• Oakes had five strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work for the Auggies in the first game. Bambenek had a strikeout in relief in the first game and six strikeouts in 4.1 innings of starting work in the second game.


SATURDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS
• Kappers went 3-for-3 with a double, run scored and an RBI for the Auggies in the first game, while Schmahl had two hits, including a triple, a run scored and an RBI.
• Duffy hit a run-scoring single in the third inning for the Auggies. Augsburg scored twice in the fourth inning, with a run coming across on a sacrifice bunt by R.J. Cervenka (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) and another scorin on a single by Schmahl.
• Brandt had five strikeouts in five innings of work for the Auggies in the first game.
• Augsburg's lone run in the second game came across on an RBI single by Rhett Hebig (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) in the seventh inning.


FOR THE FOES
• Brandon Pelley and Drew Kammerer had seven hits each for Franklin on the weekend, both driving in three runs. Six of Pelley's seven hits were doubles. Pelley scored three runs, while Kammerer had a double and triple, scoring five runs.
• Jameson Brock had six hits on the weekend, including a triple. He drove in two runs and scored four runs.
• Jacob Troxell, Mitch Schuman and Mitch Frey had four hits each for Franklin on the weekend.
• Aaron Leming pitched a complete-game victory for Franklin in Saturday's second game against Augsburg.
