Auggies drop series opener to Saint Mary's

MINNEAPOLIS -- A three-goal outburst in an 88-second span gave Saint Mary's University a 3-0 lead in the first period, which it built to a 5-0 triumph over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Mary's scored three times late in the first period, then added single goals in each of the next two periods for the 5-0 victory.
• Augsburg outshot Saint Mary's by a 34-21 margin. John Bretzman (SR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had four saves in the first period for Augsburg, before being relieved by Fredrik Melander (SO, Uppsala, Sweden/Trinity-Pawling Prep (N.Y.) HS). Melander had 12 saves in the final two periods.
• Nate Flynn (FY, Hastings, Minn.), Rory Vesel (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) and Dylan Meier (SO, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) had four shots on goal each for the Auggies.


FOR THE FOES
• Nick Albergo had two goals in the game for the Cardinals, with Kellen Wasell, Bob Marx and Bob Kinne adding the other Saint Mary's goals.
• Wasell, Albergo and Marx scored goals for the Cardinals in the 1:28 span in the first period.
• Kelvin Walz and Taylor Portner had two assists apiece for the Cardinals.
• Phil Heinle had 34 saves in goal to record the shutout for Saint Mary's.
