Auggies gain series split with Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. -- Mack Ohnsted (JR, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) scored two goals on special teams, including the eventual game-winner in the third period, as Augsburg College claimed a 5-4 victory over host Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Despite being outshot by a 29-20 margin in the game, Augsburg was able to take two-goal advantages twice in the game and held off the Cardinals for the key MIAC victory.
• George Jackson (SR, Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies just 2:19 into the game, scoring his first goal of the season, assisted by Drew Allen (JR, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS).
• Ohnsted scored his first goal of the game at the 5:46 mark of the first period, claiming a shorthanded goal off an assist by Rory Vesel (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS).
• After the Cardinals tied the game at 2-2 with two goals early in the second period, the Auggies took a 4-2 lead with two goals in a 1:05 span. Dylan Meier (SO, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) scored from Corbin Chapman (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) and Daniel Hildebrandt (SR, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS) at the 11:14 mark, followed by a goal from Chapman at the 12:19 mark, assisted by Max Pernhem (FY, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan). 
• Ohnsted capped the scoring for the Auggies with a 5-on-3 power-play goal at the 12:43 mark of the third period, assisted by Vesel and Lucas Hendrickson (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS).
• Fredrik Melander (SO, Uppsala, Sweden/Trinity-Pawling Prep (N.Y.) HS) had 25 saves in goal for Augsburg

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With four games remaining in the MIAC regular season, Augsburg is in a tie for fourth place with 21 points, just a point away from third-place Saint Mary's 22. The top five teams qualify for the MIAC postseason playoffs.
• Ohnsted now has a team-high 12 goals and 22 points on the season. He stands tied for fourth among MIAC players in overall statistics in goals, while standing tied for sixth in points.
• Chapman is tied for the team lead with 11 assists on the season, a total tied for ninth among MIAC players in overall statistics.


FOR THE FOES
• Chad Cesarz and Johnny Morales scored goals for Saint Mary's in a 2:58 span early in the second period. Mike Mezzano scored a power-play goal in the second period, and Martin Gruse scored for the Cardinals in the third period.
• Bob Kinne and Cole Pierce had two assists each for the Cardinals.
• Phil Heinle had 15 saves in goal for Saint Mary's.
