Auggies claim pair of wins in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) went 9-for-10 at the plate, driving in five runs and scoring three, leading the Augsburg College baseball team to a pair of wins at the Tucson Invitational Games on Sunday at the Kino Athletic Complex.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
• Julkowski went 6-for-6 with a double, triple, four RBI and two runs scored in the win over Wisconsin-Superior, then went 3-for-4 with a double in the win over Luther.
Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) went 5-for-7 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and four runs scored in the two games.
• Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) and Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) had four hits each in the pair of games, with Buescher connecting on three doubles and driving in two runs, and Pruszinske collecting a triple and three RBI.

WISCONSIN-SUPERIOR GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg rallied from a 3-2, fifth-inning deficit with 11 runs in the final three innings. The Auggies went ahead with a three-run seventh inning, then scored eight runs in the top of the ninth, sending 12 batters to the plate.
• Julkowski connected on a double in the second inning, a double in the sixth inning, RBI singles in the third and seventh inning, and a two-run triple in the ninth to cap his 6-for-6 day at the plate.
• Buescher, Kappers and Pruszinske had three hits each for the Auggies, with Kappers scoring three runs, Brookshaw scoring two runs and driving in two, and Buescher driving in two runs and scoring one.
• Augsburg hitters connected on seven extra-base hits among its 22 hits in the game. Kappers had a double and triple, as did Julkowski, while Buescher had two doubles. Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) also had a double in the game.
Tyler Flakne (SR, Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) started on the mound for the Auggies and struck out six while walking four in 5.0 innings of work. Ryan Mestnik (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) picked up the pitching win in three innings of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out one. Lincoln Hochmuth (SO, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had two strikeouts in an inning of relief.

LUTHER GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Julkowski went 3-for-4 in the game with a triple to lead the Auggies, while Brandon Schmahl (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) went 3-for-3.
• Kappers, Pruszinske and Steven Piette (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had two hits each, with Kappers hitting a double and Pruszinske hitting a triple.
• Augsburg scored a run in the first inning, when Buescher led off the inning with a double and scored on an RBI triple by Pruszinske. After a two-run inning by Luther in the top of the fourth, the Auggies tied the game in the bottom of the inning, as Julkowski doubled and scored on an RBI single by Piette.
• The Auggies added two runs in the seventh, coming on an RBI double by Kappers and a run-scoring single by Julkowski, and a Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.) single plated a run in the eighth.
Jordan Brandt (SO, Eagan, Minn.) struck out five while walking two and allowing six hits in seven innings to pick up the pitching win for the Auggies, with Chris Bambenek (SR, St. Charles, Minn.) earning the save with two innings of three-hit relief.


FOR THE FOES
• Matt Vold had two hits to lead Wisconsin-Superior.
• Mitch Knippenberg and Jon Opdahl had two hits each for Luther.

• Augsburg faces Central (Iowa) on Monday at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational.
