Auggies even record with win over Central

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Brandon Schmahl (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in, leading the Augsburg College baseball team to a 13-3 victory over Central College  in a Tucson Invitational Games baseball contest on Monday at the Kino Athletic Complex.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg used a six-run third inning and six-run sixth inning to build a 10-run lead. The game was halted after seven innings due to an agreed-upon 10-run rule between the teams.
• Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, Augsburg sent 11 batters to the plate, banging out seven hits to score six runs. RBI singles by Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.), along with a two-run double by Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and two more runs scoring on an error, accounted for the Auggies' scoring.
• The Auggies added another run in the fifth, as Buescher doubled to plate Schmahl.
• Back-to-back doubles by Gordon Kappers (
SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.) started the Auggie outburst in the sixth inning, as 11 batters came to the plate. Schmahl hit a two-run single later in the inning, and the Auggies also scored three unearned runs on two errors and a passed ball.
• Kappers went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Buescher and Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) had two hits each for the Auggies.
Luke Chinn (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) picked up the pitching win for the Auggies, striking out two and walking one in six innings of work. Lincoln Hochmuth (SO, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) pitched an inning of scoreless relief, claiming a strikeout.

FOR THE FOES
• Kirby Coppess and Spencer Gritsch had two hits each for Central, with Gritsch hitting a double and scoring a run. Zach Zylstra scored two of the three runs in the game for the Dutch.

• Augsburg has a doubleheader against the Illinois Institute of Technology on Wednesday (3/18) at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational.
