Auggies drop doubleheader against Illinois Tech

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.) went 5-for-9 with two runs scored and an RBI in the doubleheader, but his Augsburg College baseball team dropped both games of a twinbill with the Illinois Institute of Technology at the Tucson Invitational Games on Wednesday at the Kino Athletic Complex.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
• Brookshaw went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the first game, and went 2-for-5 in the second game.
Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with a double, scoring three runs and driving in one.
Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) had three hits each in the doubleheader, with Welckle hitting two doubles and driving in five runs, Julkowski hitting a double, scoring three runs and driving in a run, and Buescher hitting a triple and scoring two runs.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Back-to-back doubles by Julkowski and Welckle gave the Auggies a run in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1, and Augsburg took the lead when Kappers gave the Auggies a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI double.
• The Auggies scored another run in the fifth inning, when R.J. Cervenka (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) hit a sacrifice bunt to bring home Julkowski.
• In the sixth inning, Augsburg scored three runs. Buescher led off the inning with a triple and came home on a single by Brookshaw. Another run came across when Welckle was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Kappers scored on an infield groundout by Tyler Ellefson (JR, Hutchinson, Minn.).
• With the game tied 3-3, Illinois Tech took the lead in the top of the sixth inning with an eight-run frame, sending 13 batters to the plate and collecting six hits.

Jordan Petschke (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) had five strikeouts against one walk in five innings as Augsburg's starting pitcher.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg surrendered 12 runs in the first two innings, but the Auggies scored five runs in the third inning and single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
• Augsburg sent nine batters to the plate in the third inning. Julkowski and Ellefson hit RBI singles, Steven Piette (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) hit an RBI double and Welckle hit a two-run double.
• Kappers scored on a balk in the fourth inning, and a sacrifice fly by Welckle drove home Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) in the sixth inning. A Kappers single plated Buescher in the seventh inning. 


FOR THE FOES
• Brian Colon-Rodriguez went 6-for-8 with four runs scored, three doubles and three RBI for Illinois Tech, while William Cronin and Michael Malfeo had five hits each. Malfeo scored five runs and had two triples, a home run and six RBI.

• Augsburg faces Carleton and Wisconsin-Superior on Thursday (3/19) at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational.
