Auggies win pair of games in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) went 5-for-8 at the plate, including three doubles, driving in two runs while scoring two, and Tanner Oakes (SR, Jordan, Minn.) threw a complete-game shutout in the second game, as the Augsburg College baseball team scored a pair of victories on Thursday at the Tucson Invitational Games at the Kino Athletic Complex.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) had four hits in the pair of games, driving in three runs while scoring three.
Jack Duffy (SO, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS), Andrew Julkowski (
JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS), Rhett Hebig (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) and Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) all had three hits each in the two games, with Julkowski hitting two doubles and Kappers hitting a double and a triple, driving in three runs.

CARLETON GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored eight runs in the first four innings to take an 8-2 lead, giving a cushion for starting pitcher Steven Piette (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), who struck out two while walking six walks in six innings of work. Ryan Minder (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) and Chris Bambenek (SR, St. Charles, Minn.) pitched in relief for the Auggies.
• Augsburg scored a run on an error in the first inning, and Brandon Schmahl (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) singled to bring home Duffy in the second inning. A Hebig single plated two runs in the third inning.
• Kappers hit an RBI triple, and Pruszinske and Duffy hit RBI singles to bring home runs in the fourth, with another run coming on an error. Kappers had an RBI double in the seventh inning, and Duffy brought home a run on an infield groundout in the eighth.
• Kappers, Welckle and Hebig had three hits each for the Auggies, with Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.), Julkowski and Duffy adding two hits each.


UW-SUPERIOR GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Oakes struck out seven while not allowing a walk and allowing just four hits to pick up a complete-game, shutout victory on the mound for Augsburg.
• The Auggies plated three runs in the fourth inning, with Pruszinske hitting an RBI single and Welckle hitting a two-run double.
• Two more runs came across in the seventh inning, as Scott Livermore (JR, Stillwater, Minn.) hit a run-scoring single and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) hitting a sacrifice fly to plate a run. A bases-loaded walk brought home a run in the eighth inning, and a sacrifice fly by Kappers and RBI single by Pruszinske brought home runs in the top of the ninth.
• Pruszinske had three hits for the Auggies in the game, while Welckle had two hits.


FOR THE FOES
• For Carleton, Ben Frerichs and Cody Bohlman had three hits each, with Bohlman driving in a run.
• For UW-Superior, Grant Schneider threw seven innings on the mound, striking out six while walking one.
