Auggies edged twice by Saint John's

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- The Augsburg College baseball team suffered two close losses in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Saint John's University on Saturday, falling 4-3 in the first game and 11-9 in 11 innings in the second game.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
• Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) had three hits, including a double and home run, and four RBI in the doubleheader. Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.) had three hits, including a double, and three RBI in the doubleheader, while Rhett Hebig (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) and Scott Livermore (JR, Stillwater, Minn.) had three hits with a double and RBI each.
• Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) saw his streak of reaching base halted at 27 straight games (the first 22 games of this season and the last five games of last season), as he was unable to reach base in the first game. He started a new streak with a walk in the second game.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, but Saint John's scored single runs in the sixth and seventh inning to walk off with the victory.
• Augsburg scored a run in the fourth inning when Pruszinske singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Hebig. Pruszinske hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to give the Auggies the lead.
• Pruszinske and Hebig had two hits apiece for the Auggies, with Pruszinske scoring two runs.
• Tanner Oakes (SR, Jordan, Minn.) struck out six while walking two on the mound for the Auggies.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg built a 7-2 lead after five innings, but Saint John's rallied to tie the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the ninth inning. A walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th ended the game.
• Augsburg scored two runs in the third inning, as Livermore hit an RBI double, stole third and came around to score on a groundout by Kappers. A double by Josh Marlowe (SO, North St. Paul, Minn.) plated another run in the fourth.
• Brookshaw hit a two-run double and eventually came around to score on a passed ball in the fourth inning, with a sacrifice fly by Pruszinske adding the other run in the four-run frame.
• Back-to-back doubles by Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Pruszinski brought in a run in the eighth inning, and a Brookshaw double plated Livermore in the top of the ninth.
• Brookshaw and Livermore had two hits each, with Brookshaw driving in three runs and Livermore scoring three runs.


FOR THE FOES
• In the first game, Logan Hershey led off the seventh inning with a double, and with one out, Tom Druk hit a single to drive home the game-winning run.
• Hershey and Geno Larkin had two hits each for the Johnnies in the first game.
• With one out in the bottom of the 11th inning in the second game, Jantscher hit a two-run homer -- one of five home runs hit by the Johnnies in the game -- to end the contest.
• Hershey had three hits, two RBI and three runs scored in the second game, while Schiebel, McDonald, Druk and Jantscher had two hits each, with Hershey driving in two runs and scoring three runs, and Jantscher driving in three runs.

• Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (4/15) at 2 p.m. with a nonconference doubleheader at Bethany Lutheran.
