Auggies claim doubleheader sweep at Bethany Lutheran

MANKATO, Minn. -- Pounding out 26 hits and scoring 22 runs, the Augsburg College baseball team claimed a sweep of a nonconference doubleheader at Bethany Lutheran College on Wednesday, winning 4-3 in the first game and 18-5 in the second game.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
• Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.) went 5-for-10 with five runs scored, a double and an RBI, to lead Augsburg. Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) went 4-for-9 with a run scored and two RBI.
• Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) had three hits and drove in three runs, while scoring four runs himself. Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) also had three hits, including a double, and drove in seven runs in the doubleheader. Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) scored four runs in the doubleheader.
• Eleven different Auggies had base hits and nine Auggies scored runs in the doubleheader. Of Augsburg's 26 hits, 23 were singles. Auggie hitters had three doubles in the twinbill.


GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Trailing 3-0, Augsburg scored four runs in the sixth inning on just two hits -- a leadoff single by Brookshaw, and following a walk and a fielding error to load the bases, a three-run double by Welckle.
• Luke Chinn (JR, Burnsville, Minn.), pitching in relief of starter Jordan Brandt (SO, Eagan, Minn.), struck out two while not allowing a hit or walk in two innings of relief to earn the win. Tanner Oakes (SR, Jordan, Minn.) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save.
• Augsburg had just four hits in the first game, two by Brookshaw and one each by Buescher and Welckle.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored in all but one inning in the second game, including a four-run fourth inning and five-run seventh inning, to dominate in the win.
• The Auggies pounded out 22 hits, tying a season-high, to pick up the victory. It marked the 13th time that Augsburg has had 10-plus hits in a game this season.
• Seven different Auggies had multiple-hit games, including four Auggies with three hits -- Buescher, Brookshaw, Pruszinske and Steven Piette (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS). Welckle drove in four runs and scored twice, while Pruszinske drove in three runs and scored three runs. Brookshaw scored four runs in the game.
• Jordan Petschke (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) picked up the win on the mound, striking out four while walking two and allowing just four hits in four innings of work.
• Jacob Kari (FY, North Branch, Minn.), Chris Bambenek (SR, St. Charles, Minn.) and Lincoln Hochmuth (SO, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) each pitched an inning of relief.


FOR THE FOES
• Nick Caldeen had four hits, including two doubles, to lead the Vikings in the doubleheader, scoring two runs.
• Josh Montbriand, Joe Tuholsky and Adam Geiger had two hits each, with Geiger claiming a double adn triple, and Tuholsky and Montbriand each having doubles.


UP NEXT
• Augsburg will face Hamline in a nonconference nine-inning game on Saturday (4/18) at 3:30 p.m. at CHS Field in St. Paul, Minn.
