Auggies score sweep at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. -- Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) hit two home runs, and Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) set a single-season school record for doubles, as the Augsburg College baseball team scored a sweep of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Saint Mary's University on Wednesday afternoon, winning 5-2 and 17-5.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
• Pruszinske hit two home runs in the second game, giving him four of Augsburg's six home runs as a team this season. Welckle and Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) also hit home runs in the second game.
• With a double in the second game, Welckle broke Augsburg's single-season record for doubles with 18, breaking the old mark of 17 set by Rich Storholm in 2001.
• Tanner Oakes (SR, Jordan, Minn.) pitched his third complete game of the season in the first game, striking out six while walking one in seven innings of work. Oakes now has 40 strikeouts against just seven walks in a team-best 47.2 innings of work.
• Pruszinske went 4-for-9 in the doubleheader with a double, two home runs, four RBI and four runs scored, while Welckle had three hits, including a double and home run, and six RBI with three runs scored.
•  Kappers had three hits, including a double and home run, with four RBI and four runs scored, in the doubleheader. Brandon Schmahl
(JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) had three hits, including a double and triple, driving in three runs while scoring three, and Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) also had three hits in the doubleheader, scoring three runs and driving in one.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Trailing 1-0 entering the sixth inning, Augsburg scored five runs, sending nine batters to the plate. All five runs scored after two were out. Welckle drove in two runs on a single, then back-to-back-to-back doubles by Schmahl, Rhett Hebig (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Easview HS) and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) plated three more runs.
• Augsburg had just six hits in the victory -- five in the sixth inning. Augsburg was held hitless until a Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.) single in the fourth inning.
• Oakes threw just 77 pitches, surrendering seven hits, to pick up the win. Of his 77 pitches, 56 were strikes.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg built a 10-3 win after four innings, then scored another run in the sixth inning and six runs in the ninth to claim the win and the doubleheader sweep.
• In the top of the first, Welckle hit a two-run double and Schmahl hit a two-run triple to put the Auggies on the scoreboard.
• Augsburg plated two runs on a wild pitch and groundout in the second inning. Scott Livermore (JR, Stillwater, Minn.) hit an RBI double and another run came across on a groundout in the third inning, and Pruszinske hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Pruszinske then hit a solo home run in the sixth.
• Augsburg sent 11 batters to the plate in the ninth inning, Pruszinske hit a double and Welckle hit a two-run homer, and later, Kappers hit a three-run homer and Pruszinske hit a run-scoring single in his second at-bat of the frame.
• Jordan Petschke (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) struck out thee while walking four in five innings of pitching, with Lincoln Hochmuth (SO, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) striking out two in four innings of relief.


FOR THE FOES
• Willie Doll had four hits, including a double, to lead Saint Mary's in the doubleheader, while Ben Buerkle had three hits and two RBI.
• Jon Schlemmer hit a home run for the Cardinals, while Drew Denning and Cale Pieczynski also hit doubles.
