Auggies gain split with Cobbers

MINNEAPOLIS -- Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) went 4-for-7 with three RBI and four runs scored, and Jack Duffy (SO, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) hit his first collegiate home run and drove in four runs, as the Augsburg College baseball team claimed a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday at Parade Stadium, falling 4-2 in the opener and winning 15-14 in the nightcap.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Concordia-Moorhead 4, Augsburg 2; Augsburg 15, Concordia-Moorhead 14
LOCATION: Parade Stadium, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 16-16 overall (6-8 MIAC), Concordia 21-9 overall (8-6 MIAC)

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
• Welckle went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the first game, then went 3-for-4 in the second game, driving in three runs while scoring three runs. He now has a team-high 33 RBI on the season, a total tied for sixth among MIAC players in overall statistics.
• Duffy connected on his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the fifth inning of the second game.
• Rhett Hebig (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) and Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.) had three hits each for the Auggies in the doubleheader, with Brookshaw scoring four runs.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Tanner Oakes (SR, Jordan, Minn.) pitched his fourth complete game in his eight starts this season, striking out five while not walking a batter and allowing just six hits. But the Cobbers scored three runs in the top of the first inning and another in the fourth, never trailing in the contest.
• Augsburg scored a run in the third inning, as Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) plated Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) on a sacrifice fly.
• Augsburg's other run came in the bottom of the seventh, as Hebig hit an RBI single to drive home Welckle.
• Six different Auggies had hits in the game, all singles.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg used a six-run second inning to take a 7-1 lead in the second game, but Concordia rallied back to take an 8-7 lead in the middle of the fourth inning. Augsburg then scored seven unanswered runs to take a 14-8 lead after six innings, but Concordia again rallied to tie the game, scoring four runs in the seventh and two in the top of the eighth.
• The Auggies took advantage of back-to-back errors by the Cobbers -- two of six Concordia errors in the game -- to score the eventual game-winning run. With runners at first and third and one out, Welckle hit a single to left field, plating Brookshaw with the go-ahead run.
• Concordia sent a runner to third on a dropped fly ball with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Augsburg's Steven Piette (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) -- one of five Auggie pitchers used in the game -- shut the door on the Cobber comeback by forcing a fly ball to right to end the game.
• After Augsburg scored a run in the first inning on a Welckle RBI single, the Auggies sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning. RBI singles by Brookshaw and Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) plated runs, and after a bases-loaded walk and hit batter, two more runs came across on a single by Brandon Schmahl (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS).
• Four more runs came across in the fourth inning, as Duffy and Hebig hit RBI singles, Schmahl drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and another run came across on a bases-loaded walk.
• After Duffy's two-run homer in the fifth, the Auggies scored another run in the sixth, taking advantage of two Cobber errors. Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Brookshaw.

FOR THE FOES
• Bill Jacobson struck out two while walking one in six innings of work to pick up the pitching win for the Cobbers in the first game, with Bryce Feia pitching a one-run seventh to earn his ninth save of the season
• Concordia collected three doubles -- a one-out double by Devin Johnson, a two-run double by Eric Carlsen and a run-scoring double by Cody Rahman -- to score three runs in the first inning of the first game, and Tim Carlson hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.
• Aaron Green went 3-for-6 in the second game, scoring three runs and hitting a grand-slam homer in the seventh inning.
• Nick Bornhauser hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning for the Cobbers, while Rahman hit a three-run double in the third inning.
