Auggies drop twinbill to Macalester

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College baseball team dropped a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to visiting Macalester College on Thursday evening at Parade Stadium. Macalester claimed wins by 3-1 and 8-5 scores.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Tanner Oakes (SR, Jordan, Minn.) pitched his fifth complete game in his nine starts this season, striking out six while not walking a batter and allowing just four hits. But the Scots scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings to gain the victory.
• Augsburg's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) led off the inning with a ground-rule double, moved to third on a grounder, and scored on a two-out fielding error. 
• Jack Duffy (SO, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) also hit a double for the Auggies in the fifth inning. Billy Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis.) and Bryce Pruszinske (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) each had singles for Augsburg.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, but the Scots scored seven straight runs over the next five innings to earn the sweep.
• Augsburg sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) hit a two-run double and Brandon Schmahl (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) hit a two-run triple to account for the Auggie scoring.
• Another run came across in the second inning, when Brookshaw hit a single, stole second and moved to third on a fielding error, then scored on a single by Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS).
• Jordan Petschke (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) struck out seven while walking two and allowing six hits in five innings of work. Reliever Lincoln Hochmuth (SO, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had seven strikeouts against no walks and two hits in 3.1 innings of relief.

FOR THE FOES
• Jonathan Melms went 4-for-5 in the doubleheader for the Scots, including a 3-for-3 effort with four RBI and a run scored in the second game.
• Quentin Stuart hit a solo home run for Macalester in the first game. Nick Mar drove in the other two runs for the Scots in the first game, with an RBI single in the third inning and a suicide squeeze bunt in the fifth inning.
• Peter Bertel hit two doubles and scored three runs in the second game, while Phillip Stuhr hit a double and scored two runs, and Stuart and Nick Sia each hit triples.
• Joseph Aulisi struck out four while walking one to claim the win for Macalester in the first game, with Brendan O'Connor pitching a scoreless seventh to claim the save.
• O'Connor started for the Scots in the second game, while Dylan Edwards-Gaherty pitched six innings of relief to claim the win, striking out nine while walking five and throwing 111 pitches (71 strikes).
