Auggies score nonconference win at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, leading the Augsburg College baseball team in an 8-3 win at Gustavus Adolphus College in nonconference action on Friday afternoon.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Eight different Auggies had hits in the game, with Steven Piette (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Rhett Hebig (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) each recording two hits.
• Augsburg scored a run in the top of the first, as back-to-back doubles by Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Piette plated a run. Three more runs came across in the second inning, as Hebig hit a run-scoring single and Kappers hit a two-run single.
• Augsburg scored on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, then added two more runs in the sixth inning, as Kappers hit an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch. Julkowski scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning to cap the Auggie scoring.
• Ryan Minder (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) struck out one in four innings of work to pick up the pitching win. Luke Chinn (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) pitched four innings and Chris Bambenek (SR, St. Charles, Minn.) pitched one inning of relief.

• Auggie hitters had five doubles in the game, giving them a season total of 88. Five Auggies have eight or more doubles this season, led by Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), who has a single-season school-record 19.
• Through Thursday's games, Augsburg was ranked No. 14 nationally among NCAA Division III teams in doubles per-game with a 2.44 per-game average.

FOR THE FOES
• Max Fidler was 3-for-4 to lead Gustavus, hitting a two-run home run in the second inning.
• Garrett Fuchs and Evan Reed had two hits each for the Gusties. Fuchs hit an RBI double in the seventh inning.
