Augsburg softball scores sweep at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Jacquline Nichols (FY, Royalton, Minn.) had three hits, driving in four runs and scoring four runs, leading the Augsburg College softball team in a doubleheader sweep at Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Monday. Augsburg won by scores of 9-4 and 10-6.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
• Nichols went 3-for-7 with a double and triple in the doubleheader, driving in four runs while scoring four runs. Adding a walk, she reached base in four of her eight plate appearances in the doubleheader.
• Lauren Torborg (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) had four hits in seven at-bats, scoring three runs and driving in a run.
• 
Lindsay Helbach (SR, Amherst, Wis.) had three hits on the day, including a home run, driving in three runs while scoring a run. She also pitched 8.2 of the 14 innings in the doubleheader for the Auggies, picking up the pitching win in the first game.
• Brianna Cline (FY, St. Clair, Minn.) had three hits in the doubleheader, scoring a run and recording an RBI.


GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg used a five-run third inning, sending 10 batters to the plate, to take an advantage it would not relinquish en route to the victory. Amanda Niznik (SO, Columbia Heights, Minn.) had a two-run single, Torborg and Meghan Springborn (FY, Oakdale, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) hit run-scoring singles, and Nichols drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk.
• The Auggies plated two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Haley Larson (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) hit a run-scoring double and later came around to score on a fielding error in the sixth. In the seventh inning, Cline reached base on an error and later scored on another error, and Helbach drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt.
Sarah Buckner (JR, Duluth, Minn./East HS) hit a solo home run in the first inning for the Auggies.
• Torborg went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Larson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Another five-run inning, this time the top of the sixth, propelled the Auggies to the second-game victory and a sweep of the doubleheader.
• Sarah Buckner (JR, Duluth, Minn./East HS) cleared the bases with a three-run double, Nichols drove home Buckner with an RBI single, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Larson in the sixth inning.
• Nichols opened the scoring for the Auggies with a solo home run in the first inning.

• Helbach hit a two-run homer in the second inning, and an RBI double by Nichols and an RBI single by Cline plated runs in the third.
• Nichols went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs driven in to lead the Auggies, while Cline had three hits and Helbach had two hits.

FOR THE FOES
• Micaela LaRose, Keelin Davis and Cassie Clarke had three hits each for the Knights in the doubleheader. Davis and Clarke had two doubles each, and LaRose drove in two runs.
• Arielle Zuaro and Molly Steinberg had two hits each in the doubleheader.

• Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Wednesday (4/8) at 4:30 p.m., with a doubleheader at Macalester.
