Augsburg baseball swept by Hamline

MINNEAPOLIS -- Gordon Kappers (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) extended his streak of reaching base to 22 straight games, one of three Augsburg College hitters with three hits in the Auggies' doubleheader against Hamline University on Wednesday at Parade Stadium. Hamline swept the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twinbill, winning 3-2 and 8-1.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
• Going 2-for-4 in the first game and 1-for-4 in the second game, Kappers extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to nine. He has now reached base in all 22 games this season, and has had at least one hit in 18 games. Including the last five games of last season, Kappers has now reached base in 27 straight games.
• Andrew Julkowski (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS), Rhett Hebig (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) and Abe Welckle (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) also had three hits each in the doubleheader for the Auggies, with Julkowski and Welckle recording two doubles each. Julkowski scored two runs, while Hebig had two RBI and Welckle drove in the other Auggie run.


GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 2-1 lead, but Hamline scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, and the Auggies left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Augsburg stranded 10 runners on base in the game.
• Back-to-back doubles by Julkowski and Welckle gave the Auggies a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, and Hebig drove in Julkowski on a single in the sixth inning to give Augsburg a 2-1 lead.
• Jordan Petschke (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) struck out two while walking one and allowing an unearned run in six innings of pitching for the Auggies.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Hamline built a 5-0 lead after three innings and extended the advantage to 8-0, before Augsburg scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
• Welckle hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth and scored on an RBI groundout by Hebig for the Auggies' lone run.
• Julkowski and Welckle had two hits each for the Auggies in the game, with Julkowski also recording a double.


FOR THE FOES
• Jacob Picht and Matt Connell had three hits each for Hamline in the doubleheader, with Picht hitting two doubles and driving in two runs. Connell scored two runs and drove in a run.
• Andy Sammon, Dan Moro, Tyler Summers, Colin Olstad and Evan Cordell had two hits each for the Pipers. Connell drove in three runs, Moro drove in two runs and Olstad had a triple, an RBI and also scored three runs. Cordell scored two runs and had an RBI
