Augsburg sweeps Bethany Lutheran in opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The preseason No. 20 nationally ranked Augsburg College volleyball team opened its 2015 season with a sweep of Bethany Lutheran College in a nonconference match on Tuesday afternoon at St. Olaf College. 

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg def. Bethany Lutheran 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Bethany Lutheran recorded the first point in the first set, but Augsburg rattled off 10 of the next 12 points and never looked back. Bethany Lutheran's 1-0 lead in the first set proved to be its only lead of the night. 
• Ashley Peper (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) hit .706, with 12 kills on 17 attempts and no errors, to lead the Augsburg attack while playing in just two sets. 
• Jessica Lillquist (SR, Sebeka, Minn.) and Jordan Weeding (SO, Greenfield, Minn./Rockford HS) each had strong offensive performances as well, recording seven and six kills respectively. Lillquist hit .545, with just one error in 11 attempts, while Weeding hit .600, with no errors in 10 attempts.
• Macey Terhell (FY, Osceola, Wis.) led Augsburg with eight digs, while Maier chipped in six. 
• Courtney Lemke (JR, Brownton, Minn./Gencoe-Silver Lake HS) led all players with 17 assists, while Morgan Malley (FY, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central) and Bridget Bednar (SO, Pierz, Minn.) dished out seven and six respectively.
• DeeDee Maier (JR, Middleton, Wis.) was deadly with the serve, as she finished with nine service aces. Augsburg finished with 13 as Terhell, Lemke, Malley, and Peper each finished with one service ace.  

FOR THE FOES
• Alexandra Grejlak finished with 15 assists and four digs.
• Kristen Mielke recorded seven kills to lead Bethany Lutheran.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to compete in the Northwestern-St. Paul Invitational and starts with Coe (Iowa) on Friday (9/4) at 3 p.m.
• Bethany Lutheran travels to the Minnesota-Morris Tournament and will compete against Simpson (Iowa) on Friday (9/4) at 5:30 p.m.
