Auggies rush to 54-21 win over Concordia-Wisconsin

MINNEAPOLIS -- Tyrell Martin (SR, West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) rushed for 80 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns, part of a six-rushing touchdown performance for the Augsburg College football team in a 54-21 win over Concordia University-Wisconsin in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• As a team, Augsburg put together 557 yards of total offense -- 302 rushing yards and 255 passing yards -- averaging 7.7 yards per-play to claim the win. Meanwhile, the Auggie defense limited Concordia-Wisconsin to 393 yards of total offense -- 270 passing yards and 123 rushing yards.
• Martin scored three touchdowns for the Auggies, rushing scores of 24 and 12 yards in the second quarter, and a four-yarder in the third quarter.
• Quarterback Ayrton Scott (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) accounted for 366 yards of total offense, completing 17-of-25 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns against an interception, while rushing for a game-high 111 yards on 16 carries, scoring a three-yard touchdown in the first quarter to open the scoring.
• Scott throw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Joey Sonnenfeld (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) late in the second quarter, and a one-yard touchdown to Scott Bossard (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) early in the third quarter.
• Sonnenfeld caught eight passes for 188 yards to lead the Auggies, including completions of 47, 47 and 31 yards in the game.
• Tiras Bolton (SO, Omaha, Neb./Omaha Westside HS) and James Newton (SO, Roseville, Minn.) scored their first touchdowns as Auggies, both in the fourth quarter -- Bolton on a two-yard run and Newton on a nine-yard run. Bolton rushed for 99 yards on 13 carries, all in the second half.
• Defensively, Alan Medina-Gonzalez (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) led the Auggies with seven tackles (four solo), including 1.5 tackles for-loss and a shared sack with Khoa Nguyen (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS). R.J. Cervenka (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS), Bryce Nelson (SR, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) and Zane Larson (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) had five tackles each.
Tyler Sis (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) and Isiah Malone (SO, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Park Center HS) each had a forced fumble and fumble recovery, with Sis adding a blocked punt early in the third quarter.
• Augsburg's defense recorded 11.0 tackles for-loss in the game, while also recording three quarterback hurries.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With his 366 yards of total offense, Scott has moved into 17th place in NCAA Division III history in total offense, with 11,488 career yards (3,155 rushing, 8,333 passing). His 359.0 yards of total offense per-game in 32 games is currently second-best in Division III history, behind the 364.6 yards per-game by Brett Elliott of Linfield (Ore.) in the 2004-05 seasons.
• Scott holds all of Augsburg's career rushing records -- 556 rushes for 3,155 yards and 30 touchdowns -- while holding the school record with 79 passing touchdowns. He stands second in career passing yardage (8,333), third in completions (604) and fourth in attempts (1,019).
• Martin is now averaging 95.5 rushing yards per-game, with 191 rushing yards on 30 carries. Martin was also an NCAA Division III national tournament qualifier for the Augsburg wrestling team, finishing 20-6 last year at 174 pounds for Augsburg's national championship squad.

FOR THE FOES
• Aaron Nixon completed 23-of-32 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown for Concordia-Wisconsin, a 28-yard scoring pass to Tyler Majewski in the fourth quarter. Nixon also rushed for a 24-yard touchdown late in the second quarter, part of a 14-carry, 57-yard effort.
• Austin Padilla scored a three-yard rushing touchdown with a minute to play in the game.
• Dominic Saragaglia caught five passes for 80 yards for the Falcons.
• Bryan Thomas had 10 tackles (nine solo), a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, while Malcom Bowers and Damon Mull had six tackles each. Austin Mugnai had an interception for the Falcons.
