Auggies open conference play with win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- A well-rounded attack, with four Auggies finishing with eight or more kills, led the Augsburg College volleyball team to a three-set sweep at St. Olaf College in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg def. St. Olaf 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-20)

RECORDS: Augsburg 9-2 overall (1-0 MIAC), St. Olaf 8-4 overall (0-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• All three sets were close during the early and middle points, but decided down the stretch as the Auggies pulled away when it counted. Augsburg was able to take advantage of some defensive Ole miscues and finished with its second-best hitting percentage this season (.304).  
Ashley Peper (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) finished with a match-best 10 kills with a .429 attack percentage, only one error, and six digs. 
• The only other player with double-digit kills in the match was Augsburg's Jessica Lillquist (SR, Sebeka, Minn.) with 10 and an attack percentage of .304, while Jaelyn Arndt (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) finished with eight kills and an attack percentage of .381. Jordan Weeding (SO, Greenfield, Minn./Rockford HS) also finished with eight kills.
• Setter Courntey Lemke (JR, Brownton, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) led all players with 34 assists in the match, adding nine digs and a kill. 
• Anchoring the Augsburg defense were Macey Terhell (FY, Osceola, Wis.) and Taylor Linn (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) with 12 and 11 digs respectively. DeeDee Maier (JR, Middleton, Wis.) continued her serving success, adding three aces to her stat line. 


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg's win over St. Olaf tonight marked its fifth triumph in a row over the Oles. The last time Augsburg lost a match to St. Olaf was on Saturday, October 9, 2010. 
• Augsburg has a number of athletes in the top-five in the conference in a number of statistical categories: Ashley Peper is second in kills per-set (4.41), and total kills (194); Courtney Lemke is second in assists per-set (9.13); Macey Terhell is fourth in total digs (218); and DeeDee Maier is third in service aces per-set (0.53).  

FOR THE FOES
• Kathryn Johnson led the Oles with eight kills, while Abby Carpenter recorded five kills. 
• Abby Slack finished with a match-high 16 digs, and Kersten Bork  finished with 19 assists.

• Augsburg travels to Mount Vernon, Iowa for the Cornell College Triangular with matches against Loras College and Cornell College on Saturday (9/19) at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively. 
• St. Olaf travels to Waverly, Iowa for matches against Coe College and Wartburg College on Friday (9/18) at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.
