Gustavus pulls away from Augsburg football

ST. PETER, Minn. -- The teams combined for 1,078 yards of total offense, as Gustavus Adolphus College claimed a 59-42 win over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at Hollingsworth Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg gained 561 yards of total offense (273 rushing, 288 passing), but fell victim to three first-half turnovers, two of which led to Gustavus touchdowns, as the Gusties built a 35-14 lead at halftime.
• Quarterback Ayrton Scott (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) completed 17-of-24 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns against one interception, while also rushing 19 times for 173 yards and a 54-yard touchdown early in the third quarter.
• Two Auggie receivers went over the 100-yard mark in receiving yardage, as Scott Bossard (SR, North Branch, Minn.) caught seven passes for a career-best 123 yards and a touchdown late in the game, and Joey Sonnenfeld (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) caught five passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns -- a 46-yard catch in the second quarter and a four-yard reception early in the fourth quarter.
• Tyrell Martin (SR, West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) had 15 rushes for 93 yards and two touchdowns -- a five-yard run in the first quarter and a 10-yard run in the third quarter.

• Augsburg outscored Gustavus by a 28-24 margin in the second half, scoring touchdowns on all four of its second-half drives.
• Defensively, Matt Bowlin (JR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had his first double-digit tackle day of his collegiate career, recording 10 tackles. 
• Bobby Collins (JR, Lompoc, Calif.), Raymond Carter (SO, Jordan, Minn.) and Isiah Malone (SO, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Park Center HS) had eight tackles each, and Brandon Williams (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Cristo Rey Jesuit HS) had a quarterback sack.


FOR THE FOES
• Gustavus quarterback Mitch Hendricks completed 26-of-32 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing nine times for 26 yards and a touchdown.
• Matt Boyce caught eight passes for 106 yards and three touchdowns, and Karim Ortiz rushed 28 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Hunter Johnson also caught a touchdown pass in the game.
• Nick Frandsen scored on a 69-yard interception return late in the first half for the Gusties. Frandsen and Anders Raarup had 10 tackles each for the Gusties.
• Gustavus had 517 yards of total offense in the game (311 rushing, 206 passing) and scored on nine of its 12 possessions in the game.
