Auggies give No. 6-ranked Wartburg a scare

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Senior quarterback Ayrton Scott (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another for Augsburg College, but the Auggies fell short of an upset at No. 6-ranked Wartburg College, falling 35-27 in the season-opener for both teams at Walston-Hoover Stadium on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Scott completed 12-of-27 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 19 times for 92 yards and an 11-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. He completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Derek Ruff (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) late in the first half, and a 19-yard scoring pass to Nicholas Brundy (SR, Lompoc, Calif.) in the third quarter.
• Tyrell Martin (SR, West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) scored on a six-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to give the Auggies a 20-14 advantage. Martin rushed for a game-high 111 yards on 18 carries in the game -- both totals his career-bests.
• Brundy's 19-yard touchdown reception gave Augsburg a 27-21 lead with 5:30 left in the third quarter, but the Knights took the advantage back with a touchdown with 1:33 left in the quarter, then scored an insurance touchdown with 5:02 left in the final frame.
• Augsburg had three chances to draw even in the final five minutes, but each drive was halted on an interception -- two by the Knights' James Garlock.
• Joey Sonnenfeld (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) caught four passes for 79 yards for the Auggies.
• Defensively, Bobby Collins (JR, Lompoc, Calif.) and Alan Medina-Gonzalez (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) had eight tackles apiece for the Auggies, with Bryce Nelson (SR, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) recording an interception. Matt Shively (JR, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS), Tyler Sis (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) and Mykar Groves (SR, West St. Paul, Minn./Simley HS) each had sacks for the Auggies.
• As a team, Augsburg was outgained by a 407-395 margin in the game. Augsburg held a 203-163 edge in rushing yardage, while Wartburg held a 244-192 advantage in passing yardage.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With his 92-yard rushing effort, Scott eclipsed the 3,000-yard plateau for career rushing yardage. He has now rushed 540 times for 3,044 yards and 29 touchdowns, all school records.
• Scott also became the second Auggie in school history to eclipse the 8,000-yard plateau for career passing yardage. He now has 8,078 passing yards on 587-of-994 passing with 77 touchdowns against 42 interceptions. His 77 touchdowns are a school record, while he stands second in passing yardage. 


FOR THE FOES
• The Knights took the lead for good on a 15-yard pass from Logan Schrader to Riley Brockway with 1:33 left in the quarter, then added an insurance score on a Brandon Domeyer 1-yard run with 5:02 left in the game, capping a 15-play, 83-yard drive.
• Domeyer rushed for three touchdowns for Wartburg -- a 4-yard run in the first quarter, a two-yard run in the second quarter and the final score of the game in the fourth quarter. He gained 59 yards on 20 rushes to lead the Knights.
• Schrader completed 18-of-28 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns for Wartburg, with Robbie Anstoetter catching five passes for 74 yards.
• Gunner Tranel had nine tackles (one solo) to lead the Knights, while Will Janssen and Rob Rottler had eight tackles apiece.
