Kloncz scores twice, Augsburg sweeps Stevenson

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ashley Kloncz (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) scored two goals for the Augsburg College women's hockey team, as the Auggies completed a nonconference series sweep of Stevenson University with a 4-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Kloncz opened the scoring for the Auggies at the 15:46 mark of the first period, putting home a shot in front off a cross-ice pass from Callen Naasz (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS). 
Bridget Walter (FY, Princeton, Minn.) gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead at the 2:18 mark of the second period, on a blast from the point, assisted by Sarah Buckner (SR, Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS).
• Sixty seconds after Stevenson scored its first goal, Augsburg made it 3-1, when Kayla Fuechtmann (SR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) scored from Darby Lindgren (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) at the 10:46 mark of the second period.
• Kloncz capped the scoring with a goal 1:33 into the third period, assisted by Valerie Whichello (FY, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) and Megan Johnson (FY, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS).
• Augsburg claimed a 23-18 advantage in shots on-goal in the game. On the weekend, the Auggies outshot the Mustangs by a 61-37 margin.
Rebecca Sonnek (SO, Edina, Minn.) claimed 15 saves in goal to pick up her second win of the season for the Auggies.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg completed the series sweep of Stevenson, outscoring the Mustangs by a 11-4 margin on the weekend. The nonconference series sweep is the first for the Auggies since a sweep of Finlandia (Mich.) on Jan. 10-11, 2014.
• Johnson now has a team-high nine points (five goals, four assists), tied for eighth-most among MIAC players in overall statistics.
• Kloncz's performance marked her first two-goal game and eighth multi-point game of her collegiate career.


FOR THE FOES
• Jessie Capanelli scored for the Mustangs at the 9:46 mark of the second period, as she got a breakaway pass from Allie Bruns just after exiting the penalty box following a minor penalty.
• Katie Abbott scored for Stevenson at the 9:15 mark of the third period on the power play from Chelsea Blackburn and Tori Emoff. During the power play, Stevenson pulled its goalie for an extra attacker.
• Caitie Darosa had 19 saves in goal for the Mustangs.


UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to MIAC play next weekend with a series against Bethel. Next Friday's (1/15) game is at 7 p.m. at the Schwan SuperRink in Blaine, and next Saturday's (1/16) game is at 7:30 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
• Stevenson is in action next weekend with a nonconference series at Sacred Heart (Conn.).
