Augsburg falls to MIAC-leading St. Thomas

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team saw its four-game win streak snapped by a hot-shooting University of St. Thomas team in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday evening at Schoenecker Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg grabbed the opening bucket of the evening, but St. Thomas outscored the Auggies 31-14 during the middle of the first half. Augsburg took control of the remainder of the first half and was able to cut the Tommie lead to 41-38 at the intermission.
• The Auggies were not able to keep up with the hot-shooting Tommies in the second half, who connected on 61.5 percent (16-of-26) in the frame and outscored the Auggies by a 47-39 margin.
• Offensively, the Auggies were led by a career-high 14 points from Kevin McKiernan (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS), who also added a career-high five assists.
Richie Perea (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo/Wasson HS), Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and Nick Varner (SO, Farmingson) all scored in double figures for the Auggies, with 12, 11 and 10 points, shooting a combined 12-of-16 from the field.
• Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) led all players with a game-high 11 rebounds, while adding nine points and a pair of assists.
• Augsburg conntected on a season-best 50.0 percent (11-of-22) from three-point range.

• For the game, Augsburg shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field, while St. Thomas shot 60.4 percent (32-of-53) from the floor. St. Thomas claimed a narrow 29-27 advantage on the boards. Augsburg claimed a 32-25 advantage in bench points and a 10-6 advantage in second chance points, but was outscored 20-8 in points off turnovers and 42-16 in points in the paint.

FOR THE FOES
• St. Thomas, ranked No. 6 in the latest D3hoops.com Division III national poll, was led by Cortez Tillman, who scored a game-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting, while adding five rebounds, a pair of assists and steals.
• Ryan Saarela led the Tommies on the boards, pulling down nine rebounds, while adding nine points and five blocked shots.

• Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (1/13) at 7 p.m., when the Auggies travel to Arden Hills to take on Bethel University.
