Early run gives Johnnies lead, win over Auggies

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- The Saint John's University men's basketball team used an early 13-2 run to establish a double-digit lead, en route to a 91-68 victory over visiting Augsburg College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Sexton Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Leading 10-8, Saint John's outscored Augsburg by a 13-2 margin over a 4:24 span, taking a 23-10 advantage with 13:48 left in the first half. The Johnnies eventually expanded the lead to 44-29 at halftime, and led by as many as 28 points in the second half.
• Augsburg was paced by Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), who scored 17 points with two rebounds and three steals. The effort marked his sixth straight double-digit scoring game and 12th in his 14 games this season.
• Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) scored 12 points with six rebounds. He has scored in double figures in 13 of his 14 games this season.
• Coming off the bench, Nick Varner (SO, Farmington, Minn.) scored eight points with four rebounds in 19 minutes of action.
• Harry Sonie (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored six points, and Ryan Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), Richie Perea (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) and Joe Zangel (SR, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored five points each.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field, but hit just 3-of-13 from three-point range and 13-of-21 from the free-throw line. Saint John's shot 58.6 percent (34-of-58) from the field, including 14-of-27 from three-point range.
• Saint John's outrebounded Augsburg by a 38-21 margin.


FOR THE FOES
• Saint John's was led by Alex Schmidt, who scored 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-8 from three-point range.
• Mitchell Kuck scored 19 points with nine assists and three steals, and Joe Risinger scored 19 points with five rebounds and five assists.
• Tyler Weiss scored 11 points and added 10 rebounds.
