Big first half leads Auggies to win over Scots

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring 53 points on 61.3 percent shooting from the field in the first half, the Augsburg College men's basketball team cruised to a 94-70 victory over Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Wednesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg took advantage of its best shooting night of the season, connecting on 56.5 percent (35-of-62) from the field, to pull away from Macalester. Augsburg connected on 61.3 percent from the field (19-of-31) and led 53-34 at halftime, eventually pulling away to lead by as many as 29 points in the second half.
• Thirteen different Auggies saw game action and 10 scored, with five scoring in double figures. 
• Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) scored a team-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field, adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals. The 21 points marked Olmscheid's fourth 20-plus-point effort of the season.

• Joe Zangel (SR, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, adding four rebounds, a blocked shot and three steals.
• Harry Sonie (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored 13 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field, with six assists, three steals and two rebounds.

• Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) scored 12 points with four rebounds, and Kevin McKiernan (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) scored 10 points with four assists.
• Coming off the bench, Ryan Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored seven points, Nick Varner (SO, Farmington, Minn.) scored six points and Myles Shepherd-Anderson (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) pulled down a team-best five rebounds.
• Augsburg committed just eight turnovers in the game, while forcing 14 Macalester turnovers. The Auggies claimed 11 steals and had 21 assists on their 35 field goals. The Auggies outrebounded the Scots by a 32-30 margin.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg's 53 points were its most in the first half since scoring 54 points in a 102-52 win at Macalester on Feb. 8, 2014.
• The Auggies connected on 50-plus percent shooting from the field for the seventh time this season.
• Augsburg had five players score in double figures for the fourth time this season.


FOR THE FOES
• Macalester was paced by Kareem Ismail, who scored 22 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field, while also contributing five rebounds and two blocked shots.
• Jordan Black scored nine points, while Michael Gutierrez scored eight points with four assists.
• The Scots also had a solid shooting performance, connecting on 47.5 percent (28-of-59) from the field.
