Auggies now alone in first place in MIAC after draw

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's hockey team moved into first place by itself in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey standings with a 3-3 overtime tie with Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at the Moorhead Sports Center. Concordia claimed the bonus point with a 2-1 shootout win in four rounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg built a 3-0 lead early in the third period, before Concordia scored three goals in a 2:15 span to tie the game at 3-3, forcing overtime. After a scoreless five minutes, Concordia claimed a 2-1 advantage in four shootout rounds to claim the extra point in the MIAC standings. The game is officially recorded as a 3-3, overtime tie.
Eli May (SO, Eagan, Minn.) put the Auggies on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at the 10:53 mark of the first period.
• Eric Brenk (FY, Moorhead, Minn.) gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead with a goal from Evan Hesse (SO, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) and Max Pernhem (SO, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) at the 12:16 mark of the second period, Brenk's second goal of the weekend series.
Nate Flynn (SO, Hastings, Minn.) scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season at the 1:46 mark of the third period, a power-play goal from Brenk and Rory Vesel (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS).

• Augsburg outshot Concordia by a 37-36 margin in the game. Brandon Jones (SR, Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS), making his fourth start in goal for the Auggies, had 33 saves.
• Flynn and Lukas Gillett (FY, Rosemount, Minn.) had five shots on-goal each, with Trevor Stewart (JR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Eastmont HS) adding four shots.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With the point for a shootout loss, Augsburg moved into first place by itself in the MIAC standings with 19 points, a point ahead of St. Thomas (9-6-2 overall, 6-2-0 MIAC), which was idle this weekend. Concordia is in third place with 17 league points.
• Flynn's 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) are sixth-most among MIAC players in overall statistics. His 11 goals are tied for fourth-most, and his 10 assists are tied for eighth-most.
• Vesel's 13 assists this season, a team-high, are tied for fifth-most among MIAC players.


FOR THE FOES
• Jordie Bancroft scored two goals in a 12-second span to spark the Concordia third-period comeback, scoring at the 5:36 mark from Bryan Kronberger and at the 5:48 mark from Matt O'Dea.
• Concordia tied the game at the 7:51 mark, as Adam Wiertzema scored from Jeremy Johnson and Tucker Corborn.
• Alex Reichle had 34 saves in goal for the Cobbers.

• Augsburg returns to MIAC play next weekend with a series against Saint Mary's. Next Friday's (1/29) game is at 7 p.m. in Winona, Minn., and next Saturday's (1/30) game is at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
