Big 1st period leads to Auggie 4-1 win at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. -- With 10 different Auggies figuring in the scoring, the Augsburg College men's hockey team used a big first period to claim a 4-1 victory over Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at the Saint Mary's Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg scored three goals in the first period, then added another goal 1:28 into the second period to build a 4-0 lead. It's Augsburg's ninth game of the season -- and seventh in its last 10 games -- scoring four goals or more.
Drew Anderson (SO, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) put the Auggies on the scoreboard with a goal from Lukas Gillett (FY, Rosemount, Minn.) and Trevor Stewart (JR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Eastmont HS) at the 4:32 mark of the first period.
Will Peterson (SO, Eagan, Minn.) gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead at the 12:40 mark of the first period, scoring from Luke Dietsch (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Nate Flynn (SO, Hastings, Minn.).
• Eric Brenk (FY, Moorhead, Minn.) scored a power-play goal from Corbin Chapman (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) and Eli May (SO, Eagan, Minn.) at the 17:22 mark of the first period.
• Stewart capped the scoring with a goal from Gillett and Brady Bender (FY, Steamboat Springs, Colo.) 1:28 into the second period.

• Augsburg outshot Saint Mary's by a 26-22 margin in the game, including a 13-4 advantage in the first period. Jordyn Kaufer (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) had 21 saves in goal for the Auggies, improving to 10-4-0 on the season.
• Stewart and Lucas Hendrickson (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) had four shots on-goal for the Auggies, while Gillett had three shots.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With the win, Augsburg gained a point in the MIAC race, with its 22 points now two ahead of St. Thomas (9-6-3 overall, 6-2-1 MIAC), which tied third-place Saint John's 2-2 on Friday. The Tommies gained a bonus point with a 1-0 shootout win.
• Flynn's 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) are sixth-most among MIAC players in overall statistics. His 11 goals are tied for fifth-most, and his 11 assists are tied for eighth-most.

• The first MIAC goalie to reach the 10-win mark this season, Kaufer stands second among MIAC goalies in overall goals-against-average (2.35) and fourth in save percentage (.911).

FOR THE FOES
• Jared Johnson scored the lone goal of the game for the Cardinals at the 8:03 mark of the second period, scoring from Landon Farrell and Chad Cesarz.
• Jake Tugnutt had 22 saves in goal for Saint Mary's.
