Big 2nd quarter give Gusties lead, win over Auggies

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Augsburg College held a 14-5 lead after one quarter, but a 21-8 run in the second quarter gave Gustavus Adolphus College a lead it would not relinquish, en route to a 60-54 decision in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Gus Young Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg scored the first 11 points of the game, en route to a 14-5 first-quarter advantage. But Gustavus outscored the Auggies by a 21-8 margin in the second quarter, including a 18-2 run over the first 6:34 of the period. Gustavus led 26-22 at halftime and expanded its lead to as many as 11 points in the second half, before the Auggies cut the advantage to four points in the closing minutes.
• Maria Loughlin (SR, Rogers, Minn.) led the Auggies with 20 points, her third time scoring 20-plus points in her last six games. She added four assists and three steals.
• Bridget Bednar (SO, Pierz, Minn.) had her second straight double-digit scoring game, and sixth this season, with 13 points to go along with two rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot.
• Jessica Lillquist (SR, Sebeka, Minn.) scored nine points with three rebounds, while Marie Fitzgerald (SR, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) had a team-best seven rebounds.
• Allison McKee (SR, New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored six points with three rebounds and four steals.

• Augsburg connected on just 30.0 percent (18-of-60) from the field, while Gustavus shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53). The Gusties outrebounded the Auggies by a 48-32 margin.

FOR THE FOES
• Mikayla Miller scored 12 points with three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals, and Miranda Rice scored 12 points with six rebounds, an assist, steal and block.
• Brooke Lemke scored eight points, and Kelsey Carpetner scored seven points with six rebounds.
