Auggies rally for home draw with Macalester

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lionel Vang (FY, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) tied the game with a goal in the 61st minute, and Clark Page (SO, Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) had a brilliant effort in goal, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team claimed a 1-1, two-overtime tie with Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Macalester 1 (2OT)
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 5-9-2 overall (2-4-2 MIAC), Macalester 10-3-3 overall (4-2-2 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After surrendering a goal in the 19th minute, Augsburg tied the game at the 60:51 mark, when Vang scored his fifth goal on a blast from 15 yards out, assisted by Peyton Boich (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS).
• The game was a back-and-forth thriller, as the teams combined for 44 shots -- 24 for Macalester, 20 for Augsburg. Augsburg outshot Macalester by a 6-4 margin in the 20 minutes of overtime.
• Making his fifth start of the season in goal, Page came up with 12 saves for the Auggies, including several dramatic saves down the stretch. His counterpart, Macalester's Zeke Vanier, also had a strong effort, claiming eight saves.
• In addition to Page, three other Auggies played the full 110 minutes -- defenders Barinedum Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS), Luke Falk (SO, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) and T.J. Johnson (SO, Blaine, Minn.)
• Vang had five shots for the Auggies, while Ben Henry (SR, Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln HS) had four shots and Bobby Kohl (JR, Shorewood, Wis.) had three shots.

FOR THE FOES
• Danny Baumann put the Scots in front with a goal at the 18:01 mark, a header on a rebound from a Clayton Smith shot. Charlie Spurr fed Smith's shot, and Baumann made a diving header to score on the rebound, colliding with the goalpost in the process.
• Smith had five shots in the game, while Ionatan Kuperwajs had four shots. Spurr, Jake Burke and Zach Moore had three shots each.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER:
• "Great effort from our guys tonight -- they gave everything they had. I thought we had the game won on a few occasions, but Zeke was there to deny us tonight. We enjoyed the ball, particularly in the second half, and we created high-quality chances."
• "It was good to see Jason Scheeler (JR, Blaine, Minn.) really thrive tonight, and I thought Barinedum was our most threatening player ,as he attacked the right edge relentlessly. We got good interplay from our midfield and had a few sequences that were jaw-dropping to watch, if you enjoy that kind of soccer.
• "Their goal came from chaos -- good service to the back post and then a ball headed across the frame where Baumann sacrificed himself for the goal. They do what they do very well -- tight in the back, incredible in the air, and dangerous in transition and set pieces. Fortunately, we carried much of the possession and limited their chances on the break tonight."
• "Moving forward, we must defeat St. Olaf. It's as simple as that. We will need help from everyone in our program that night -- past and present."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts St. Olaf on Tuesday (10/25) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
• Macalester travels to face Saint John's on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
