Auggies clinch home playoff game with 1-0 win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Behind a league-leading 14th goal of the season by Ashley St. Aubin (FY, Burnsville, Minn.), the Augsburg College women's soccer team clinched a home game in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs with a 1-0 win over St. Olaf College on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, St. Olaf 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 14-3-0 overall (8-2-0 MIAC), St. Olaf 7-7-0 overall (4-6-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• With the victory, Augsburg secured a spot among the top three teams in the league standings, guaranteeing a home game in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs. Augsburg now has 24 points in league play, three points ahead of third-place Bethel's 21. The Auggies could clinch the No. 2 spot in the playoffs, a first-round bye and a home semifinal game next Wednesday (11/2), with a win or tie in its regular-season finale at MIAC regular-season champion St. Thomas (28 points) on Saturday (10/29) at 1 p.m, or with a Bethel loss or tie in its finale at Macalester on Saturday at 7 p.m. Should the Auggies lose and Bethel wins on Saturday, the Royals would claim the No. 2 playoff seed based on their 1-0 win over Augsburg on Oct. 1. As the No. 3 seed, Augsburg would then host a playoff quarterfinal game on Tuesday (11/1).
• St. Aubin scored the lone goal of the game just 8:50 into play, taking a short feed from Ciara Gregory (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and firing from the top of the penalty box over the St. Olaf goalkeeper. The goal is St. Aubin's 14th of her rookie campaign, keeping her in the lead in the MIAC's overall statistics in both goals and total points (33).
• St. Aubin is now in a tie for third place in school history in single-season goals, and is in a tie for fifth place in single-season points. Olivia Muyres set the single-season records for both goals (19) and points (47) in 2013.
• Goalkeeper Marissa Guillou (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) recorded four saves to claim her third shutout of the season and 16th of her career. She is in fifth place in school history in the category, with Maggie DeGroot (2005-08) holding the school record with 36.
• The Auggies outshot the Oles by a 13-11 margin. St. Aubin had four shots in the game, while Gregory, Marta Anderson (SR, Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS) and Trine Boeystad (FY, Rykkinn, Norway/Nadderud VGS) had two shots each.

FOR THE FOES
• Mackenzie Schoustra had four shots for the Oles, while Abby Stets had three shots and Sarah Behr had two.
• Julie Johnson had one save in goal for St. Olaf.

QUOTE FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH MIKE NAVARRE:
• "We weren't as sharp as we would have liked, but credit goes to St. Olaf too. They were strong, particularly in the middle. Fortunately, we got a beautiful goal from Ashley and our defense was solid."
• "Saturday's game at St. Thomas will be a good test for us. I'd like to congratulate St. Thomas on their MIAC championship. Our league is so strong and balanced, to win the league outright back to back is a great achievement, so congratulations to Sheila McGill, her staff and their players."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to face St. Thomas on Saturday at 1 p.m.
• St. Olaf closes its season on Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting Saint Benedict.
