Auggies go 1-0-1 at Showcase, top Bethel 5-3

BLAINE, Minn. -- Jumping out to a 3-0 lead after one period, the Augsburg College men's hockey team held on for a 5-3 win over Bethel University to finish 1-0-1 at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase on Saturday at the Schwan Super Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Paul Soubry (SO, Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Paul's HS), Nate Flynn (JR, Hastings, Minn.) and Corbin Chapman (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) scored goals for the Auggies in the first period, giving the Auggies a 3-0 lead. 
• Soubry's goal was assisted by Dylan Meier (SR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) and Ryan Cagnoni (FY, Arvada, Colo./D.C. West HS), Flynn's goal was assisted by Eli May (JR, Eagan, Minn.), and Chapman's goal was assisted by Flynn and Will Peterson (JR, Eagan, Minn.).
• Bethel cut the lead to 3-2 in the third period, but the Auggies gained an important insurance goal with 1:21 left, as Lukas Gillett (SO, Roseville, Minn.) scored from Drew Anderson (JR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) and Luke Dietsch (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS).
• The Royals scored an extra-attacker goal with 32 seconds left, but Chapman scored his second goal of the game, an empty-netter, to cap the scoring for the Auggies.
• Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 29-25 margin. Gillett had five shots for the Auggies, while Chapman had four shots.
• Making his first start in goal as an Auggie after transferring from Wisconsin-Stout, Nick Schmit (SO, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) had 22 saves to earn the victory.

FOR THE FOES
• Justin Bonanno scored two goals for Bethel, with Jeff Flicker adding the other Royal tally.
• Jesse Garcia had 24 saves in goal for the Royals.
