Augsburg falls to Simpson in season-opener

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team dropped its season-opener to a tough Simpson College squad 95-71 in nonconference action on Friday night at Cowles Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In an fairly evenly matched second-half, a 50-31 halftime lead proved too much for the Auggies to overcome. Simpson shot 61.8 percent (21-of-34) from the field in the first frame, while Augsburg was only able to convert on 40.7 percent (11-of-27) of its shot attempts.
• Collin Olmscheid (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) led all players with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds. Olmscheid shot an impressive 10-of-14 from the floor and added an assist in 36 minutes of action.
• Newcomers Chuckie Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Henry Mulligan (FY, Iowa City, Iowa) also finished in double figures for Augsburg, posting 15 and 12 points respectively.
• In captaining the Auggie offense, Richie Perea (SR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) dished out seven assists, while adding five rebounds and two points.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 40.6 percent (26-of-64), while Simpson converted on 52.2 percent (35-of-67) of its shot attempts. The Storm claimed a 41-36 advantage on the boards and a 16-9 advantage in the turnover battle.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• This is the fourth consecutive season that Augsburg has played Simpson on season-opening weekend.

FOR THE FOES
• The Storm finished with three players in double figures, led by Sam Amsbaugh, who finished with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
• DJ Dafney posted a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double for Simpson College.
