Auggies sweep Gusties, extend unbeaten streak to eight

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Nick Schmit (SO, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) stopped 34 of the 35 shots he faced, enabling the Augsburg College men's hockey team to extend its unbeaten streak to eight straight games with its seventh straight win, a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference triumph at Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Schmit improved to 4-0-0 on the season with the victory, collecting 34 saves, including 14 in the third period.
• All three goals came in a 8:24 span in the second period.
• For the second straight night, an Auggie scored his first collegiate goal, as Adam Pancoast (JR, Thief River Falls, Minn.) opened the scoring at the 2:24 mark of the second period, assisted by Brett Bukowski (JR, Superior, Wis.) and Chris Nuth (SR, Trabuco Canyon, Calif./Mission Viejo HS). Pancoast was playing in his 11th career game.
• Gustavus scored at the 9:55 mark, but Augsburg took the lead back just 53 seconds later, as Lukas Gillett (SO, Rosemount, Minn.) scored from Evan Hesse (JR, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) and Dylan Meier (SR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS).
• Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 35-29 margin. Max Pernhem (JR, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) and Corbin Chapman (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) had four shots on-goal each for the Auggies.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg, the defending MIAC regular-season and playoff champions, is ranked No. 10 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national poll and No. 11 in the latest D3hockey.com national poll.
• Augsburg is one of just five NCAA Division III men's hockey programs still unbeaten to start the season, with its seven straight wins only one behind national-leader Utica (N.Y.), which has started the season 8-0-0. Oswego State (N.Y.) is 7-0-0, while Colby (Maine) and Tufts (Mass.) are both 2-0-0.

FOR THE FOES
• Evan Erickson scored from Ross Kovacs at the 9:55 mark of the second period for the Gusties' lone goal of the game.
• Chris Amsden had 27 saves in goal for Gustavus.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to MIAC play on the weekend of Dec. 2-3 with a series against St. Olaf. The Dec. 2 game is at 7:30 p.m. at the Northfield Ice Arena, and the Dec. 3 game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
