Sonnek shines as Auggies snap streak to Gusties

MINNEAPOLIS -- Behind a 33-save shutout by goalie Rebecca Sonnek (JR, Edina, Minn.), the Augsburg College women's hockey team snapped a 28-game winless streak to Gustavus Adolphus College, as the Auggies claimed a 1-0 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Darby Lindgren (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) scored on a 5-on-3 power play at the 18:51 mark of the first period, putting home a rebound off her own missed shot. Mackenzie Molnar (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Valerie Whichello (SO, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) assisted on the goal.
• Sonnek claimed her first shutout of the season, and second of her college career, with a brilliant 33-save effort. She stopped several close-in Gustie shots, including dramatic saves on breakaway attempts in the final two periods.
• Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 33-17 margin, including a 12-3 advantage in the first period. Lindgren's goal came on the Auggies' third shot on-goal of the game.
• Augsburg also killed five Gustavus power plays, including a 5-on-3 advantage in the first period. Augsburg was 1-of-4 on the power play in the game.
• Nikki Nightengale (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had three shots on-goal for the Auggies.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg snapped a 28-game winless streak to Gustavus -- 27 losses and a tie -- dating to the 2002-03 season. Augsburg's last win over the Gusties was a 1-0 victory on Dec. 6, 2002 at Augsburg.
